I received a strange call. An operator translated to me what the caller has typed. The call seemed to be concerning a classified ad I placed last week on Graig's list.  When I discovered that the buyer was on the other side of the country I hung up. I think they are looking for people to scam. beware.

I had an ad on craigslist and a guy emailed me saying he would send me a check for more than the amount of what I was selling so that I could give the remainder to a shipping company to ship the items.  He didn't tell me the check would be for $1500.00 when what I was selling was $50.  I asked him his phone number and he never wrote back.  They wanted me to cash the check and wire money to another guy-probably so that when the bank finds out the check is fraudulent it would come out of my account and they would already have my money.  Now I keep getting phone calls at 2:00 Am from numbers I don't know and I don't answer, and they don't leave a message.  They have my address too, pretty much freaks me out.  I will never use craigslist again!  Beware!

Same thing happend to me.  I had a listing on Craigs list for the sale of Sofas for $650.00.  I received a few emails from a mrs.Angela2006@gmail.com who was interested.  I told her to call me and she advised that she could not b/c she was hearing impared.  The operator who called me from that 216 number would type out what I was saying to her.  Last week , she told me she sent a money order for the amount + extra to send to the shipping agent that would pick up the sofa.  I received two money orders yesterday 7/12/2007 each for $950.00.  I took them to my bank this morning 7/13/2007 and it will take four days to clear.  That was this morning.  I told her that I would not send money to the agent until the money clears the account.  She called me soon after to assure me that the money was fronted for the money orders. I told her, well, that is to bad. I am still not going to send you any money until it clears the bank.  I went on line and googled the phone number and I found this listings.  I just called my bank to tell them what happened.  I have to fil out some forms and they will trace the money orders to the person who purchased them. Its funny how she thought I would be stupid enough to send "my money" to her.

Thanks for posting this scam.

the same thing happened to me i was selling puppies and the man paul martel gave me the same story that he wants to buy two dogs frm me and sent me two seperate cashiers checks for 3,500.00 the letterhed that came with it came from a cross financial inc but when i called the number it was completly bogus i went to www.ic3.gov and reported fraud there. i am waiting for a response i am also going to the police tomorrow with all the information i have. NEVER ever sale to a person who is not willing to pick up the dog or has a shipping company picking it up and even when they are sending more money than what you are selling.

Thank you guys for speaking out!  OMG!  I can't believe this same thing happened to me today.  I am selling puppies on classifieds.com, and got a call from this relay number today about a guy from benstevecompany@yahoo.com who wanted to buy my two puppies.  When I asked if he was in my town, he replied that he was in Kentucky, but his "worker" would be in my area and would pick up the puppies.  He wanted me to send him a description and some pix of the puppies.  Now I suppose he was trying to get my e-mail address or something.  I decided to research his company and phone number before I e-mailed him and I found this.  SO THANK YOU FOR SPEAKING OUT!  I had no clue but felt suspicious.

I recently answered an ad at craigslist for a telecommutinf job, and was called by this number today. Now they have my name, address. :( I have had a similar scam tried on me a few years ago; contacted the fbi and secret service. They told me ( I also found my own info via internet sleuthing) this is a common scam that involves multiples parties in multiple countries that is linked through Nigeria and tied to funding TERRORISM!! I was getting harrassing phonecalls, and even threats becasue I had not sent the (fake) money. I led them on to think I hadn't realized it was a scam so the authorities could investigate - Nothing happened. This has become so prevelant, yet noone does anything about it! I would personally like to catch these jerks. DO NOT DEPOST ANY CHECKS THEY SEND YOU!!! They are excellent forgeries, and they try all kinds of scams. I just wanted you to know you're not alone....its happening all over the US, with the terrorist counterparts operating as the liasons here. I evened tracked down to fictitious shipping companies located in NYC and Houston, Texas. But because of the current way our justice system operates, these US terrorist sympathizers can't be charged. :(

I had a incident just like you had, and it went on for 2-3 months of BS from lawyer from England saying he wanted to purchase the item for a client of his who was a king in Nigeria, then when I received the shipper's information (name, address, phone number)I scanned the documents and I even got a forged check from a bank in Hawaii, I called the bank and found out it was a forged check, then when I told them the item in question got sold, the threats started, and the idiot stated that he was going to the authorities in England saying I scammed him, then he threated me and my family in a email which kept, so I collected all my information and contacted the local authorities and FBI they went after them, the authorities said I was a great help because I actually had names of the idiots and their addresses and phone numbers which helped them! Now as far as I heard the case is still going on.

I told them my bank has them if they wanted them back they would have to contact my bank.

I don't think its the fault of Craigslist, anyone on the internet can use Craigslist to perpetrate their scams. You just need to be careful and NOT EVER list your phone number in any ad that you place with Craigslist.

The Relay services are legitimately used by deaf & hard of hearing people to facilitate communication. They have been around for years in various forms. Within the last 10 years relay has transitioned to IP Relay, based on a website that anyone can use. Yes it is a problem that immature hearing people think it's hilarious to prank call friends and enemies. I don't know how easy it is to get IP Relay calls blocked by your cell phone provider. My suggestion is to be nice to the relay operator and just hang up each time you receive a relay call.

I just received a relay call (a deaf person?)inquiring about my puppies for sale.  When I sent him/her an email regarding the puppies, the email did not go through.  I am glad I found this site because this certainly does appear to a scam.  Thanks for everyone's comments on this number. jw

I also received a call from this number 216-416-0033 tonight at 10:38 PM.  I was almost sleeping, but I answered the call to see who it was because it was from a strange number.  The operator translated what the other caller was saying.  They were asking about the couches and washer I had for sale in my local newspaper.  They asked me to email them at alexbstore@yahoo.com about the details.  I did, and they said the would respond right away.  When I did not get a response right away, I decided to research the number while I was waiting for a response.  Thank God I did because I saw all of the posts about this number.  I emailed them back with a few choice words.  I am glad I took the time to research the number.  I hope there is something that I/we can do to stop these people.

This number is from a relay service, not necessarily a scam, If someone is deaf or calling someone who is deaf this is the service they would use.  Someone may also use the service pretending they need to contact someone to avoid the long distant charge.  My daughter has done this as she lives far away.  freaked me out the first time as I spoke with the operator as if I was speaking with my daughter.

It's true that calls from relay services aren't always frauds. It has become semi-trendy for teenagers to use the relay service to prank call their friends/enemies. They can add a buddy on to their AIM messenger program and call whomever they want in the U.S. I WOULD suggest that parents monitor their children's internet & cell phone usage because it's an abuse of the system for hearing teenagers to prank call their friends/enemies.

Aloha

If you get a phone call from 216/416-0033 or 612/ 524-0455 it is a total scam.  I just advised them that I knew it was a scam they were running and the caller hung up.  Then when I tried to advise the 'service' they hung up on me.  I have reported them to the Feds.  And if I can find a link to their company (help anyone?) I will be contacting the Secret Service - as requested - to ensure they are investigated.

My wife is hearing impaired and uses these relay services to place phone calls. It is true that some scammers have found a way to utilize the relay services for ripping people off. The relay services are real and provide a great service to the deaf and hard of hearing community. Those of you placing want ads on craigslist should read the warnings and ripoffs that are listed right there in plain view...they warn against dealing long distance, accepting so called money orders, and most of all..deal locally. If the item is available in your area, chances are it is available in another too, why would someone offer to pay you more for an item? Think about it.

I have had that 416 phone number in the 215 area code for ten years and almost every day I get calls from people trying to return a message or call to that number in the 216 area code about puppies or something else like that. I am having to change my phone number because I was unable to get the FCC or the Ohio atty general to make them stop and it is horribly disruptive to my life.

The same thing just happened to me just an hour ago.  I got a phone call stating they were going to translate for someone trying to reach me, when we began and i asked who it was they said that it was courtney one of my friends. And that her and and a person she knows that nobody else i hang out with knows about wanted to hang out.  I told her that i would come pick her up, and to be ready.  I though it was strange but i just thought she was trying something new.  After i got off the phone i jumped in my car and went down to her house i waited outside for her to come out side until i just went inside to figure out what was going on.  She had company and was just sitting there playing cards and had no plans on going anywhere. When i found out that it wasnt her on the phone i emmediatly got kreeped out and came home to do some research thats how i found this site.  I dont know what is going on but if anybody has any information on how i can find out who was really on the other end please let me know!
