- Bobbi| 5 repliesDoes anyone know if this is legit? I did give my information to make payment installments for the next 4 months!!!! Only because it sounded so scary. The woman said that I was gong to be taken to court for a debt that I owe from a loan I supposedly applied for online in January of 2012!!!! I asked if it was a credit card and she said she couldn't tell me what kind of a loan it was, but it wasn't a credit card. Some payday loan company. I only have had credit cards, never a payday loan. What should I do now? I am sick over this!!!

- Willow replies to Bobbi| 4 repliesBobbi, please contact the bank that issued your card. If she contacts you again, have her validate the debt in writing.
- Bobbi replies to Willow| 1 replyI received an e-mail today with the name of the company (IRS equity law firm) stating an approval # and confirmation code of the first payment. It must be real then right? Is there any way to see if they are scamming me? There is an address of the law firm too. The thing that I don't understand is why they can't reveal who the company is that wanted to sue me until full payment of the debt is "settled in full".
- Bobbi replies to BobbiNever mind Willow. I spoke to a lawyer today and he says it sounds like a scam. I google imaged the letterhead art and it came up as clipart!!!. I'm disputing it and I got a new debit card. Good luck trying to get your payments [***]!!!!! Lol
- Bobbi replies to Willow| 1 replyNever mind Willow. I cancelled the debit card after I spoke to a lawyer today. He says it's a scam alright!!! He says that they have to validate it in writing. If the payment goes through I'll go to my bank like they said and file a dispute. I will never fall for this again!!!! I now know to not be so trusting about the false threats they make. Thanks for your advice.
- Tamianth replies to BobbiBobbie, you might also want to read some of these on fake debt collectors and also know your rights! You might have to file a report with LE and then dispute the charge as fraud.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans
Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010 FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691
The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.
According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.
The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/ - VetaI got a call from a black asking did I have an account with Wells Fargo? I said yes but it was along time time ago. He said you had payday loans on the account and it went to collections. When i asked him what company was it ?he said we represent many company. He said we can settle the debt for only $500. I told him fine and gave him an old pre paid debit card(that has not been activated) and told him to withdraw $250. I knew it was a scam, because I called one week later and told him I need to change the payment, but this guy couldn't find my info. He put me on hold and a woman got on the phone and asked what can I pay on the due date, I told her $125. She said fine tooks my phone numder and said she will process the payment. I was shocked she didn't ask about the other half of the payment. I'm glad I gave her a fake card. They are [***].
