Recieved a phone call from these guys saying they work for Microsoft. They said they were doing tests with peoples Windows systems and that a large majority were inadvertantly infected with something.

They had me go to Start>Event Viewer>Windows Logs>System, and then they would point out any "Error" messages that i have and they would say "Oh no!" in a horrible actor way. That was extremely fishy, even though i knew this from the start. They then proceeded to put me on the line with a technical rep. He then said the same "Oh no!" and then told me to visit a website "www.virtualpcdoctor.com".

I didn't go on the website, instead i told them a fuse went out so my system shut down. They asked if they could call back in an hour. I said no, because i have to leave town for a couple of months on a business trip. They asked where i was going, and i told them i couldn't tell them because i work for the government.

The "technical rep" then went "Wooaah..." in the context of "We may have called someone we shouldn't have". Then i asked for a number to contact them and they said "1-226-777-0099." and then i said "Thanks" and hung up.

I did research on "Virtual PC Doctor" and the first link on good contained the word "Scam" which then validated my theory.

Just got a call from somone claiming to work for pc doctor.  He proceeded to tell me about people complaining that they were getting things downloaded to their computers that was causing their computer to crash.  He went thru the same routine that Derek reported and when I asked for a name and number he said his name was "Brad" and gave me the 226-777-0099 number.  I told him I didnt trust him because he wouldnt give me the number til I presisted and then quite annoyed said to me "Im only trying to help save your computer ..if you dont want to save your computer thats up to you"  to which I politely said "goodby" and ended the call.  What made me suspicious was the caller ID showed the number as 1-000-000-0000.  I was doubly suspicious when a person with a heavy asian accent told me his name was "Brad"

Reference from their website: Dany Waltz, 227 Rue Viateur, Granby QC J2G 5S6 (although I don't think it would be a good idea to disturb him with a bunch of phone calls - He's had the service since August 2010, so he may not have discovered how much trouble he's in yet. - If I think about it, I may call him back in a few months to see if all is still well.)

Got call from Brad last night, wanted me to go to computer right away - urgent .  Needed to be fixed now. Stalled - had visitors, got # 1-226-777-0099 to cb later.  Check #- canada 411 - in London, Ontario area - no address.  Affirmed my doubts- scam- as Mircosoft isn't that interested in my little old computer.  Won't be calling you Brad,  sorry!!!!!

I just got one of these calls. He couldn't understand why I didn't run over to my "compooooter" to input the information. Well duh, I'm not a complete moron (some parts are missing) so of course I'm not going to do that. I may not be a total techie but I'm pretty confident my computer doesn't give out my phone number and tell outside sources when it's "sick".  I really hope people don't fall for this stuff.

I just got a call from the same # and talked with some guy in India.  He said the same thing - that he was just trying to save my computer and if I didn't care about losing my "important files" then that was up to me.  I told him that I already had anti-virus software and he said that whatever was infecting computers wasn't a virus.  When I asked for more information, he just insisted that I follow the steps that he would give me to check if my computer was at risk.  He was really high pressure and treated me like an idiot, so beware women.  Don't give out any information and just hang up.  It's a scam.

i fell for the gimmick this afternoon and allowed them to access my computer. i finally figured it out when they wanted to buy a contract for their services, which was $300 for 3yrs service.  i made sure they were disconncted from my laptop before hanging up on them, where NICK said "not to hold them responsible if i expierence any problems from my comp errors they made me aware of." will pcdoctor still have access to, or have corrupted my computer?

    Yes.

If they accessed your computer at all, they may already have done considerable damage. Strongly suggest you find a real computer professional service (NEVER ANYONE WHO CALLS YOU FIRST) to examine and cleanse it before hooking it back up to the internet.

They're still at it - jan 2012 - new # 1-226-777-0328 - they've been calling me for a year. Same game every time. Now I amuse myself if I'm not too busy, ask lots of questions, etc. till I get hung up on, which always happens eventually.

Appreciate your investigation.  Have added those numbers to my blocked call list.  Today was the first time I received a call from 000-000-0000.  Have also received calls from an Alberta number regarding my computer as well.  Always late at night, so haven't snagged the number yet.
