This is a criminal extortion ring operating out of India. ABC News released an investigative report on it in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:

This is such a hoax... I have no idea how he got my email, phone or last four of social... My email was hacked into as well.... Same message as above, same dollar amount.... phone message left on my phone saying that if I didn't pay the feds were coming to my house to arrest me.  Called him back (I know I should not have) I was so irritated... he threatened to hurt my family if I didn't pay... he says he knows where I live.  Also received same call from a Daniel Cooper in Los Angeles... Sounded the same

Strange, I received the same type of message.  Here is the email that was sent to me:  This e-mail is in reference to your account with Advance Cash Expert. This account has been referred to my office for collection action. We are a Legal Attorney based in Michigan and New York. As per the client you are currently several payments behind on this pay-day loan account. The total outstanding amount on this account is $621.56.

I have been instructed to bring legal action against you as may be necessary, which may result in Judgment.

The file indicates that you have failed or refused to pay the above claim even though it appears just, owing, and correct.

You are hereby further advised that if payment is not set up within 2 business days of the date of this issue, suit in small claims court may be commenced against you forthwith and without further notice for the amount indicated above, together with prejudgment interest. Instead of small claims court, this matter may be referred for suit in municipal court.

As I am sure you are aware, if this matter goes to suit, all court costs, process server's fees, sheriff's fees, attorney fees where permitted, and other post judgment costs will be added to the amount that you already owe.

You can avoid the unnecessary actions and further expenses of a lawsuit by making immediate reply to us. For any queries feel free to call us on (231) 354-2500.

    Sincerely,

    Mike Jones,

My threat came yesterday as an mail from Mr Mike Jones, using the name as Adance Cash America.  The outstanding amount is $739.99.  Basically it's the same letter as everyone else has received with all of the same threats.  Where are they getting our phone numbers and email info from?  This is a little scary.
