- Elspeth| 1 replyWASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.
Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.
“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country. We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves. Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail tophishing@irs.gov.

http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Reiterate ... -Telephone-Scam - CherI received a call from 253-214-3386. The automated recording mentioned that the IRS was filing suit against me and that I should contact them at the phone number indicated. I am sure this is a scam. I'm certain that the IRS would contact me directly if there would be any issues; they would not use an automated recording. I did not return the call at the phone number provided.
- Call type: Prank
- Michelle from Rhode IslandJust got call too! Can't be real... never received any other calls or letters!
- Caller: Supposedly the IRS ha ha
- Mimi| 1 replyI just got the same call from 253-214-3386.....figured should be a scam.
- Caller: not sure
- Call type: Debt collector
- Melissa from MassCalled today and claiming that there is a numerical issue on tax returns and owed over 3 grand. Couldn't understand them and they said they couldn't mail anything. Total scam
- JC replies to ElspethI received the call this morning as well.It was left on my answering machine. Same message as the others are reporting.
Not fun to come home to after a particularly bad day. Thankfully, before returning the call, I came to my senses and checked it out and found this thread. Thanks for your posts. - Tennessee Thom| 1 replySame message and number left with my VM earlier today. Seems like this one is picking up in frequency today!!
- Caller: Said it was the IRS
- Call type: Debt collector
- Owl replies to Tennessee ThomYeah, I got the same call this morning. They left a message and the phone number to call back. You can tell it is a total scam as they did not mention my name or any personal info. It sounds like a robo call that they are using in general. Do not call these people.
- CallieI received the same automated call at 7:45 a.m. this morning from 855-493-8344. I was given a different phone number to call for IRS....253-214-3386, which I did not call. Shame on these people! The call was a scam.
- Caller: Said they were from IRS
- PriscillaMy 90 year old mother received a voice mail message a this a.m. from this number and was told it was the IRS and that they had a case against her and for her to call. This would be the last call before we take action against you! The poor woman was so upset. I told her it sounded like a scam and googled this number. Shame on these people is right!! I did call the number but there was no answer. I suspected a scam.............
- KimSame as above. I feel better after reading these bolgs. Thanks
- Caller: "IRS" or so they say
- Call type: Debt collector
- TrishI got one of these phone calls earlier ; the caller ID listed " caller unavailable". I only answered this because I DO know someone whose (legitimate) calls come that way. I , too, was perplexed because I do not owe the IRS money. What made me suspicious was that this caller had never left a message/contacted me previously.
I was alarmed but I am not old and/or mentally challenged, but I can understand how some people may be spooked and think it is real.- Caller: claimed to be IRS !
- Connie replies to MimiI got the same message others on this page have received. They also said to call 253-214-3386. However, the number on my caller ID is listed as 239-468-2272.
- BdymI got a call today and let it go to VM cuz i didn't recognized the number. When I listened to the VM, it had the same alarming message, that the IRS is suing me and that they have been trying to reach me. However, they did not mentioned my name. So I knew this sounded like a scam. First of all, the IRS will mail with any information if taxes are owed. They don't call. So, I Googled the phone number 253.214.3386...and viola and I found all your posts. So, let's sit back and know that this is 100% a scam. What is interesting that these scammers are doing this as we are approaching tax season. Blasted scammers!!!
