I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone.  US mail only.   IRS does not file lawsuits.   Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter.  But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters.  90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively.  IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS has no powers of arrest.    If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job.  IRS does not cold call anyone and ask for money. IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case.  No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments.  Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but  usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement.    All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals.  All  contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.

They just called my daughter.  She told her she owed money to the IRS and that they were pursuing a lawsuit against her.  My daughter said she asked to speak to someone in English, and the lady wouldn't let her speak to anyone else.  She called me, very concerned, as we just e-filed our taxes yesterday.  I called the lady back.  She did answer the phone as an IRS rep, and asked how she could help me.  Sounded like she was from India.  I told her I was going to report her, and her phone number.  She didn't understand, so I told her I was going to call the police and give them her phone number.  She understood that clearly.  She said, "Go. Go go go go".  I said goodbye and hung up.  Going to use the link above to report this incident.

Lyn:  I received a call all similar about the same time yesterday-I called it back about the same time ur daughter received call except it was a man. I pretty much said the same things u did and they hung up on me...... sure alot of scammy people.. I told him to speak better English and then he said now listen carefully and I wanted to say You Listen Carefully.

I received another call but from 253-336-5361.   SCAM  this is the third time they called but from different numbers.  I thought when you had a lawsuit against you, it comes in supeona form.  These people are not too bright.   PAY ATTENTION to who calls you before giving any info

heavy accent called to say that the IRS was suing me. Interesting to note that it was only me and not my husband, though we file married filing joint. When i told him it was not the usual way the IRS contacted taxpayers, he hung up

Automated voice left message claiming to be IRS about to file a lawsuit.
Showed up as "New York 607-527-8802" on caller ID.

Just got another automated message about the IRS filing a law suit against me.
This time the caller ID showed "New York 607-271-9593"

I got a call from 253-336-5361.  It was a recording like all of the previous posts mention.  I called them because I wanted to see how far they would go.  A man answered with an Indian accent.  Once I identified myself and asked what was going on they said "the cops will be there in an hour to arrest you and put you behind the bar"  I said are they putting me behind bars or behind the bar?  I said I'm OK if they want to put me behind a bar.  He didn't get the humor.  I asked what I needed to do and he said go to the bank and take out $25,000 and when I have the cash call him back and he'll tell me what to do.  By then he was onto me and he told me when I have the cash i can put it up my a%#.

SCAM!!!!!!  I just received a call from this phone number.  It was a recording just like everyone else received.  I thought it was a scam and looked up the number on the computer which identified the phone number from Seattle, Washington.

Just received a call from this #. Typed it into google search and found out I'm not the only one. Scared the heck outta me.  Has anyone reported this to the IRS?

This was a message saying the IRS was suing me. This was the number they said to call back.

This phone number 253-336-5361 just called my hoe number and said it has initiated several calls to my home phone and the call was the last warning.  I needed to call the number above or be sued by the IRS-lawsuit.  Um, yea, IRS will always contact you with a court order; do not fall for this scam!!!!!

5.1.15 received VM saying IRS was filing a lawsuit w/ us ... last warning.

I received a recorded call today from someone saying that this was the last call before the IRS filed a lawsuit against me.  The return number to call was 253-336-5361.  I called back and got a recording.  I left a message to stop calling me and told them I was a lawyer and I would sue them for scamming.

Received call today from this number. Glad I looked up the number. Was about to call them back.  Said they were the irs filing lawsuit. Message said last warning. Never got any warning before this call.

Got a message from this number. When I called back, he said I owed over $3,000 and I would be arrested within 30 minutes if I didn't pay. Also said I would not get bail and would have to stay in jail for 48 hours, with my penalty then adding up to $47,000. Told him I would be calling my account and he hung up quickly. My accountant said I was the 35th person to call him.

These are criminal extortionists operating in overseas boiler rooms using VOIP to alter their identities and locations and out of the reach of US law enforcement.

If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.

By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.

Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.

They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.

Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.

The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.

These fake IRS scammers KEEP on calling me, each time from a different phone number. I'm getting so sick of being harassed and threatened. The first time they called I actually believed it was the IRS. They told me that Federal Agents already had a warrant for my arrest and that they would be at my door within 45 min. to arrest me! (I was smart enough NOT to give out any personal info, but they knew my full name, home phone, and home address--scary!).

I received two more of these fake IRS messages yesterday. Before it was male voices, now they have female voices. Thick Indian accents, too.

Today, I answered the phone and a woman who identified herself as "Ann (Something)" said that she was with the IRS and that there was a warrant for my arrest.

"You've called me so many times---you really think I believe you?" I asked. Total silence from her. I said, "That threw you off script, didn't it?" She seemed ticked off and replied, "There's no script". I asked for her name, which she repeated. I then asked for her badge number. Caller said, "It's 0345". Oh, really!? Only 4 digits?? I got the feeling she was making it up off the top of her head.

"You'd need a better scam to convince me", I warned her. She replied, "It's NOT a scam. Federal agents will be at your house to arrest you within 45 minutes. At this point, she hung up on me.

These scammers have been annoying me so often I thought I'd 'play' with them a little bit.
