Called twice but I did not answer as did not recognize number.  Did not leave message.  Called number back.  Guy who answered said he was Richard Harris from the Dept of Treasury.  When I questioned him further, he hung up.

I just received a call from this number.  It was a guy with a heavy almost incomprehensible accent. He mentioned the words "federal criminal offense",  and "second attempt to contact".  It sounded very threatening but did not use the name of any individual who was the target of the message.  I called the number back and there as a weird (obviously unofficial) message stating that this was not the Treasury Department, that the number had been shut down and to hang up.  However, I had just received the call moments before.  This is some kind of fraud.  DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION.  THE US TREASURY DEPARTMENT DOES NOT CONTACT YOU BY PHONE LIKE THIS.

This number is obviously a scam, but it sounds suspicious and scary.  Why are they allowed to call us at all!
Especially if we are on the do-not-call registry??  What the he**.....

    >>  Why are they allowed to call us at all! <<

    Good grief!

This post has two parts.  The =second= is for people who are interested in the realities of the Do Not Call list.  The =first= is for people who have difficulty understanding long explanations, but think the DNC list does not work.

    1)
The DNC list is not a magic switch attached to your phone line, that will block calls.

The DNC list is intended to help stop calls originating from legitimate telemarketers.
    * Your calls were not from legitimate telemarketers.
    * Therefore, the DNC list will not stop those calls.

    2)
The DNC list does not automatically block calls.  Instead, it provides a list of  "do not call" phone numbers to legitimate, registered telemarketers who pay a fee for the list.

The DNC list exempts political callers, survey organizations,  charities, and companies with preexisting business relationships, as well as debt collectors, but these organizations might have their own, internal Do Not Call list (ask them).

The DNC list is not effective against criminals, spammers and scammers, because those people do not subscribe to the DNC list, and do not care if you are on or off that list.
Its purpose is to stop calls from legitimate telemarketers, and it does a pretty good job at that.  Just think ... if there were no DNC, you would be receiving incessant calls from BOTH legitimate and scam telemarketing callers!

    Here is your reading assignment:
    http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0108-national-do-not-call-registry
    https://www.donotcall.gov/
    http://www.ftc.gov/news-events/media-resource ... try/enforcement
    http://www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-releases ... lemarketers-pay

Remember, the FCC's Do Not Call site is a good one to report unwanted calls from LEGITIMATE telemarketers.   To report spammers and scammers, visit the FTC site, at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/

If you receive calls even after reporting them (and waiting a sufficient time), then you should consider using a call blocker app, device or service as your first line of defense.  Google "call blocker" to see such things at Amazon or other sites.

I have recently received two calls from this number. I didn't answer and both times the same middle eastern sounding man left a vague, threatening message about the U.S. Treasury and the next step being a court appearance. This is obviously some sort of phishing scam, but I don't think this is shut down yet as I just received this call today, late afternoon.

Report the Calls to the real IRS here:
•report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484.
•You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov. Add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments in your complaint.

Do consider maybe getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $60.00 or so.

Just received a call and a man with an accent left a voice Mail. He claimed his name is Steve Martin and mentioned something about taxes from 2012. I called back and told him that I am going to report him to FBI if he keeps calling. Then he hang up the phone.

I just received a scam call from the above mentioned phone number.  Caller did not name the person the call was directed too (big flag).  Caller said it was ralating to a treasury department offense and ignoring the call would be considered my 2nd felony offense - or something like that. DO NOT EVEN PICK UP THE PHONE.  These bad guys are phishing.  Don't let them catch you.

Steve Martin (with a very eastern Indian accent) has called here 3 times within the last hour. I picked up on the 3rd call just to confront the man but heard the same recorded message he left on our recorder the first 2 times.

"My name is Steve Martin and I am calling recording regarding an enforcement action...(inaudible)...US Treasury...(inaudible)... Ignoring this will be an intentional 2nd attempt at a wide initial appearance before a Magistrate Judge or a Grand Jury for a Federal Criminal Offense. My number is 267-499-3620. I repeat 267-499-3620. I advice you to cooperate with us and help us to help you. Thank you."

Not correct at all but hey way to try to sound intelligent.  The DNC is to keep your phone number from being sold as part of lists it does not at all stop legitimate telemarketers.

I just received 2 consecutive calls, also from a man with a heavy Indian accent.  When I called the 1st time, he answered and said he was calling from the "Alan Bage" company  (I asked him to spell it).  When I asked the reason for the call, he asked me for my home phone no. I gave it to him and then he hung up.  I called back, and got the same deep voice message saying something like "Listen very carefully. This is not the Treasury Dept. This line has been shut down. Pls hang up now.  Do not leave a msg ".

cells like these don't last that long since it doesn't take long it all for people to realize it's a scam (being that all these posts were made within the last week or so) so they try to do it in one fail swoop. it is scary that this may be a burner number though and it is simple to move from one to another with ease.
