Received a call from this number this afternoon with the caller ID reading "LOCAL OFFICE", and since I was waiting for callbacks from several businesses, I decided to not screen the call and instead chose to pick up.
I was met with silence for a few seconds and then some sort of computerized noises before the line went silent again.

I received a call from this number, when answered, nothing. hung up and recalled was told "one moment please" then silence. I hate getting this calls, I don't have time to waste on stupid calls!

Out.  Number on caller ID and I returned the call.  It was answered right away.  I could barely hear but I managed to hear collection agency.  I have no debts.  SCAM

Probably fishing for lie calls so another company can call and harass or scam you later!

I have this called, Shown on my Caption call, said Local office, I said, hello? I am on caption call, can anyone talk to me? and it got hung up.

Calls numerous times.  There is only silence.  Has been calling for a very long time.

I finally got an answer when I called back.  This is First National Collection Agency.  Call, get their address, ask for verification of the debt then and by letter.  They have to provide this.  Make certain this debt is still collectible or past the collection date.  Ask for the account number of the original debt, name and date debt was incurred. If in fact you are not the one owing the debt, tell them there is no one there by that name and to remove your number from their list. If they continue, block them and contact the FTC.  Good Luck.

I was expecting a call from my union.  It turns out to be a collection agency looking for my husband passed way in 2006. I tried to explain this to the "lady" and all she could say was to ask me if I knew his SSN. I again explained that he was dead. I got no apology from her, not even that she would take my number out of the system. Something needs to be done about this.

What you described is an example of "social engineering" or "phishing".  Fortunately you did the right thing by refusing to give personal information, and by reporting it here.  If everybody did this then they would be out of business.  Sorry you have to deal with these jerks.
