I received a call on my cell phone from this number on 12/17/15 and the message said the IRS was filing a lawsuit against me.  So I used a land line at my work and called it back and some guy with a Middle Eastern accent answered "Internal Revenue Service".  I told him I knew they weren't the IRS and I had the FBI on the other line and he immediately hung up.  It's definitely a scam to get people to give credit card numbers for help holding off the IRS.  Don't answer this number!

"This call is officially your final notice from the IRS (Internal Revenue Service). The reason for this call is to inform you that the IRS is filing a lawsuit against you. To get more information about this case file, please call immediately on our department number 281-393-8118."  This message was left on my VM on 12/17/2015.  Just an FYI: re the IRS not using the phone as a means to contact us, I recently heard a newscaster say that this is to change and our government will allow the IRS to CALL us (nothing like confusing all of us, especially seniors, who have been told for years that the IRS will NEVER contact us via a phone call).  I hope that this isn't true!

SCAM!!  This number left an automated message stating IRS was attempting to file a lawsuit, and I called it back from my landline work phone.  A guy with a foreign accent answered "IRS".  He proceeded to ask me if I can pay the debt and I kept asking him was he actually with IRS yes.  He put me on hold to check with the what he called the IRS superior and I hung up.  I attempted to call the number back and it went to busy signal and then no answer after several attempts to call.  I was gong to let them know I know they were a scam!!!  DO NOT FEED INTO THE SCAM!!

I received the same exact phone call only moments ago.  Is this something we should be reporting to the IRS?  Or does anyone know of any department that is handling this sort of thing?

I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone.  US mail only.   IRS does not file lawsuits.   Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter.  But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters.  90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively.  IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes.  IRS has no powers of arrest.    If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job.  IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of  money.  IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone.   IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case.  No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments.  Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but  usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement.    All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals.  All  contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.

Thank you...just filed a companion on the Treasury website link you provided.  I got a call tonight and it sounded fishy from the start given that they provided no actual name or case file number.  Unbelievable!
