- Alfalfa replies to FloThe Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
•is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
•refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
•asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
•exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
•Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.
•Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
•Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
•Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
•Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

- tcisco| 1 replyThis happened to me yesterday at work. All kinds of threats about being arrested and such. And she said if another law firm calls just hang up on them and when I call her to ask her for a password so I know I am dealing with the right person. These people are getting good. I just want to know how I can get them to stop calling my work and cell.

- Alfalfa replies to tciscoThis is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
- LisaThese two guys were so aggressive it was unbelievable! They said I owed $689.98 for a cash advance loan but couldn't give me the date of the loan or what company the loan was from. They said that if I didn't pay the loan off by the next day 11:00am the attorney general and local police would be at my place of employment to arrest me for fraud and I would spend 21 days in prison because my state wanted to make an example out of me! After I asked question after question he told me that he didn't care if I didn't pay it back and I would just go to jail. He absolutely refused to give me any information...not even the law firms telephone number....he said all of this would be provided after I made the payment in full. While I was on the phone with them, I Googled the law firm only to find there was no such law firm! And the company name the gave me of US Cash, is not a real company. They even said that no matter what loan company you borrow from (he then recited an entire list of payday loan companies) that all the money comes from US Cash! These people a vicious and cruel. I now understand how they are able to frighten the elderly into giving them money. Oh one more thing....they also asked if I had a credit card, or if I had ever taken out any kind of other loans that I defaulted on....my reply was...anything that I defaulted on or any judgements are public record, you should know these answers you shouldn't have to ask me! What they don't know is that I work for the government and they called me on a government phone and action will definitely be taken!
I'm definitely going to follow the steps given above by Alfalfa.

- Caller: Baxter & Baxter

- LucyThey pretend to be a lawfirm and ask for your social security when it's not given they get rude and say they'll mail your affidavits and you'll have to go before a judge. When I called them out on being a scam they started making sexual remarks and jokes about how rich they are from scamming people. Now they won't quit calling me.
- Caller: Some fake lawfirm.

- M.WilsonReceived a call on the main company's switchboard asking for one of our employees. The man told me that, the employee in question was a suspect and would be arrested unless he called immediately. The name of the supposed law firm was Rick & Hammond Legal Associates. The individual had a hindu accent and was very, very aggressive. A legitimate law firm would never communicate any information to anyone other than the individual in question. Certainly not at work.
I did a reverse phone look up and it indicates the number is routed out of TX. I called back, to try to get more information and the same man answered the phone "law firm". I asked for the name/address of the law firm again. He gave me the same name as before, but not the address and hanged up on me. Now, every time I call that number, it rolls over to different numbers throughout the country with a busy signal. What a scam!- Caller: Rick & Hammond

- Debbie SmarttI keep receiving phone calls one my cell phone and my work phone. This caller claims to be from David Jones from Samuel Son Law Firm at both 281-968-2154 and 281-968-0846. I was transferred to another person after I confirmed that I had no idea what they were talking about. I was transferred to a "paralegal officer" by the name of Glenn. He proceeded to tell me that US Financial Lending is placing subpoena on 3 civil charges all referring to check fraud. I proceeded to ask all the questions I could such as name of online payday loan company that this allegation is supposed to be referring. They kept saying there are over 600 payday loan companies that fall under US Financial Lending and they were not authorized to give me the specific payday loan company name. They quoted my e-mail address as attempts of contact. I finally got him to provide me a date of 2013. Then again, I asked for specific dates and all he could provide was November 2013 and I needed to check my e-mail account for those attempts of contact. He said I owed $5,484.87 in legally penalties and that I needed to be sure to understand that had nothing to do with the $849.51 unpaid payday loan. At this point, I said I needed a contract number that I can refer to because I needed to provide all of the information to my attorney. He gave me a 1543327 number which I have no idea what that event represents. After that I told him I would contact my lawyer and he hung up after saying things I couldn't understand because he had such a strong ethnic accent I couldn't understand a lot of what he was saying.
