I ignored a call I received from (301)223-0080 at 12:30 today. They left a message on my machine.  To my surprise, it was Xcel Energy, my utility company! I am delinquent with this month's payment.  They are calling to make a collection attempt. The call back number they left for me, to return their call differs from the number showing on my Caller ID. I'm sure it's only because they're offering me a toll-free call back number.
I was asked to return the call to (888)220-8409.

It is Xcel Energy asking me to pay my past due that I just paid off yesterday!  Sounds fishy to me.

I got a call from some guy on this number saying he was with xcel. He was saying I needed to pay my bill, I told him I needed to check some stuff out before I pay and he said he would call back in an hour. I called xcel and the numbers that they gave me did not add up in the slightest. I also mentioned something about having sent in a payment earlier and he had ignored it, seems really fishy. Do not give you account number or credit card number to this guy it is a SCAM.

Also he said I could pay with visa when Xcel no longer accepts visa payments.

SCAM SCAM SCAM......i have never been late on my xcel bill. in fact we are usually about 2 months ahead.  this number called me, said i was late i said whatever and hung up. called xcel immediately and am still almost 120.00 dollars ahead on my bill.  so what the hell they even said it was a scam.  do not answer these calls or if you do record it and go to xcel with it

They keep calling me-I just called xcel directly and I do not owe them anything. But this number keeps saying it is urgent I call.

got a call saying they were xcel-- i use mycheckfree.com to pay my xcel bill, and i had JUST paid it. no delinquency, no problem. DON'T LISTEN TO THESE PEOPLE!!!! THIS IS A SCAM TO GET YOUR CREDIT CARD NUMBER!

someone has called me twice this year and said i (he called me john?!?)needed to pay an x-cel bill. i don't have x-cel and i'm not john. he has called both times while i was at school (before 3:30.) i didn't even bother to call back. i don't own a credit or debit card either. THIS IS A SCAM BY SOME RANDOM GUY!!!

Received calls from the same # at 11:09am, 2:09pm, 5:10pm and 5:11pm so far today without any voice mails left.  I've put this as a SCAM ALERT on my facebook status to warn others, please do the same.

Okay, the number IS an Xcel Energy number, and it will answer Xcel if called.  Xcel has confirmed that West Asset Management Services uses that number to make outgoing calls to make inquiries regarding payment of overdue bills.  HOWEVER, Xcel said 1) in my circumstances that West Asset should NOT have been calling me; 2) that they have numerous reports of abuse and rudeness on the part of West Asset Managment personnel and are not happy about the situation; and 3) that any customer experiencing such a problem should call Xcel Customer Service immediately and file a complaint.  The customer service number 1-800 is on your monthly bill.

It's one thing to have a problem with bills but no one has to put up with this type of treatment. Obviously Xcel is concerned about West Asset and their behavior; and customer service in most cases will work with the customer to try to resolve problems if at all possible.

File a complaint with Xcel!

Only call the 800 number for Xcel Energy regarding your bill.  Xcel Energy confirmed there was a server error with a former collection agency it used to work through (in Maryland).  This hiccup in the server updated all files of Xcel customers.  Part of the server error is that the number being shown on your caller id shows the "trunk" (?) number of where it comes from when it's supposed to show an 800 number or likewise.  Call Xcel, they got a hold of security right away and got the answers for me almost immediately about the issue and confirmed many complaint calls regarding this number.

I expressed concern about identity theft, the service rep. at Xcel I talked to did digress about how personal information can be stolen in multiple ways and what to watch out for since it did happen to him once (i.e. cloning of your cell phone, how a thief could have done this without breaching into Xcel files just by knowing your number and your energy service company based on region).

Calls at random times. Does not leave message.

Xcel was called and they verified that this their consumer care center's number. They used to call after your bill was 30 days late but now they have been doing is sooner. Ours was 2 days late. The payments are processed at 8 pm but they said it may take 3-5 days to clear your bank account.

I just got a call from this number.  They did not leave a message.  I called them back and they have a recording to sound like Xcel Energy but I'm pretty sure it's not legit.

Receiving multiple calls per day from this number. No messages are left on my voicemail.

I got a call today as well but when I answered nobody responded to me.  When I called back I was connected to Xcel and my bill was over due cause my auto pay did not go into effect when I thought it did. This number is legit

I recieved calls from this number also. It is because of late xcel. it takes up to 5 business days for the payment to get to the automated system that makes the calls. Its a computer like everything else and your number is on a call list. If you ANSWER the call, and listen to the recording, it is against the law for them to call back less than 24 hours. Try answering and tell them i'll pay tommorow, you wont get a call the rest of day

It's Xcel Energy. They've outsourced their collections department to a call center and no longer have their employees do it anymore. So it's legit. Now I need to go and pay my bill.  :)

Sure enough- Xcel Energy.  Same story- answered the call (which, on the caller-ID said "Call Center, MD" - nobody responded to my "hello?".

Thank you for the help with the "888" call-back #, because I was able to call them back and make a payment, thus avoiding my electricity being turned-off.

THIS IS NOT A SCAM!   If you've received a call from this number then either you are LATE paying your Xcel (electric) bill (whether you know it or not!) or someone has used your telephone number as their own, and Xcel Energy is calling for them.

It's a scam. Don't believe that it's not. Use your common sense! Do not give these people any personal information. Call excel yourself using the number on your bill.
