- wcI also received a phone one call from this number and left a voicemail. Stated that legal actions would be taken if he did not return their call with 1 hour. I called the number twice and both times it rang 4 times and hung out. Who can I call to make sure this does not continue to happen. How did they get our cell phone numbers?
- DebbieGot a couple calls from this number saying there is legal action against me and to call back. It was a female using the name leeza brown. I calles back and there was no answer so I left a message to have them call me back. A few hours later, she called back, I did not answer. She threatened me.

- CharlieI got a call yesterday from this number. The voicemail was from a man named "Adam Jones" and he claimed to work for the office of legal affairs for the US Treasury. When I called back, he said that they had started legal actions against me because I had not filed my taxes in 2012 or that they were filed incorrectly, and that I would need to call back or have my lawyer call back. SCAM!!! Luckily my dad is an accountant at NASA and he has been doing my taxes for me. I was able to find all of my tax paperwork and receipts showing I had done everything correctly. Also I noticed the number the phone call had come from was a wireless number. If I didn't file my taxes the IRS would not only have a legitimate phone, but they would also show up at my door.
- Caller: Office of legal affairs, US Treasury

- RenaeI received this call too. Scam

- AndrewI just got a call from this number. Same thing, guy said his name was Mike Jones or something but he had a very heavy accent so I could barely understand him. Said the Treasury Dpt had started an action against me and I had to call a legal adviser to make sure I dont go to jail. Got a call a couple days ago too saying they were from the IRS...
- DonnaI received the same call from Adam jones
- FraudBusterA real issue with the IRS arrives by USPS mail. If you ignore it they will send a message by registered mail and you will need to sign for it. If you ignore that an agent or contractor with IRS credentials may visit your home. If that fails a visit to your employer can be next. If you still need reassurance that this caller is fake do an internet search for "IRS phone scams."
- Caller: wireless caller
- LeahJust got a call from "Kevin Daniels" heavy India accent. said I had a warrent for my arrest due to taxes owned. Really. I file my taxes every year.
- Mr. ToadI can verify that the IRS first makes contact through the mail.
In my case about 15 years ago, I got a letter stating I had made a mistake in line such and such and as a result, I owed $45 additional taxes.
I had the choice of making out a check for the amount made payable to the IRS (I think it is US Treasury now), or if I think there is an error, to call agent such and such at the following number at the local IRS office in MA. I called the agent and it turns out that THEY made the error and I didn't owe anything.
The point is, THEY make contact through the US Mail. - Astrid| 1 replyI just received a call with very heavy Indian accent today. They said something about legal action. Since i didn't really understand i asked if o van speak to someone that speaks English. He blablabed legal Action against me and hung up. I tried to call back, left a message once tried operator but noting happened. It's a scam. There is no way irs state or government would use a phone service like this. Indian accent beyond believe. What do they want? Who know. Ctrl alt delete
- Alfalfa replies to AstridWASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.
Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.
“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country. We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves. Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.
More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.
