Left message at 8.55 AM claiming to be from the IRS. Said to urgently call back to avoid IRS taking "legal actions".

Just like the previous comment, they called in the morning and claimed to be the IRS.  Also said to call back urgently to avoid the IRS taking legal action.

There is a widespread IRS (or CRA) or "tax scam" being  practiced by scammers on both USA and Canadian residents.

Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

I don't understand how they get any money, They leave a stupid recorded message just to stress you out and raise your BP.  I have not tried calling yet but I am sure they are impossible to reach.  I have at similar scammers call about credit debt that is not real, and a extended warranty on my car.  They all have the same style.  I must be on the gullible list.

I just called the phone number.  foreigner asked after 5 rings to push x number for x service etc like you would normally get.  answered immediately no wait or hold.  when I questioned him he told me to call IRS criminal investigations and have me transferred to him.  And hung up on me.  I called back.  asked if anyone ever gives him money.  he mumbled something that was no real words and hung up on me again.  Maybe I will continue to call him back and harass him (same man) as he harasses us.  I will not believe there is a call center for IRS that answers line immediately without you have to press 1. or 2 etc.  And then get the same man when you call back. these people should be in prison.

Just got a call from this number about 1 hour ago, it's a fraud IRS scam asking you to pay back taxes.

I also received this call,from a recorded sound (answering machine), claimed that it is from IRS, I called back , a guy responded me, ask for my name, and then gave my address by mistake, then he said we didn't want to talk to you and it was someone else!

Person called from this number 301 637-6122 reported they were from the irs and guy sounded like he was from india or middle eastern asked for me to confirm my name and address. He provided the information and then asked for the last 4 digits of ss number when i declined he hung up.   I called the police department they said there was nothing they could do about it.  Police said the irs will never call you on the phone.... Beware!!!!!
