- Wesley Weasel| 4 repliesThis person tries to scam people into making posts on craiglist and send you fraudulent check. Please avoid this criminal at all cost.
- Lina Hua replies to Wesley WeaselDid you ever report this person?
- shawn replies to Wesley Weasel| 2 replieshi i just received a check for $2,450. His name is John Crooks and he wants me to deposit it in my account and i must send $2000 to friends in via money gram. did you deposit your check and what happen. please let me know asap.
Thank You
shawn - Dixon Hill replies to shawnIf you do as instructed by the sender, it will bounce and you will have to repay every penny to the bank. Never ever send money via money gram or green dot as these are untraceable. Fake checks can also get you into legal trouble. Turn it over to your local postmaster or the FBI. Sending fake checks through the mail is illegal.
- J replies to shawnThe same has happened to me, but using a different name.
- MoniThis person did the same to me. Kept hassling me about taking out the money. I was waiting for that check to clear. Now the bank put a hold on my account. I was mislead and ended up sending a small portion of the money that had cleared. I was gonna send western union but he insisted on money gram. Now I know why because it can't be traced. I guess now I owe it to the bank. Be careful!! This guy is scaming us all. He used to communicate with me via email then text then different email. It felt off like there were more people involved. He keeps hassling me daily asking if the check cleared yet and to send money asap. I'm waiting to talk to my bank tomorrow but right now all my money is frozen.
- H.| 2 repliesHe mailed me the check without me even accepting the "job" and that's when I felt something was a little off. I researched everything before depositing it and I'm happy I didn't. I told him I couldn't help him anymore but he insisted that I go deposit the check and just do that 1 task. I again told him that I wouldn't and he never replied back. So be careful everyone, you never know who to really trust online.

- Elspeth replies to H.Glad you listened to that gut feeling! This is a classic check over payment scam. You are sent a check, told to deposit it and send yay much money to the scammer or another person who is also in on the scam. If you wire/moneygram/Western Union the money, the check eventually is found to be stolen or fake and you are left holding the proverbial bag - being out the money you sent, and perhaps even facing possible prosecution for passing a fraudulent instrument!

I don't recall the exact job (possibly child care), but it did involve him going to the alleged employers house. She sent a check for advanced pay and keys to access this home. When told me about it, something did not feel right. I did a search and found out it was a scam. He returned the keys and check. Needless to say the woman was not happy that he backed out. But thankfully he did.
- ByronJ| 2 repliesI was contacted by a guy who said his name was Paul Johnson for a personal assistant position on Craigslist. It's not the first time I've encountered similar scams so I was already pretty suspicious. $600 a week seemed a little too easy for what he described as simply answering emails, mailing packages, etc. But I continued fishing for info from the guy. Only personal information I gave him is stuff that's already readily available from my own website- last thing I need is to deal with identity theft. Supposedly, the guy is based in Canada but sent me the check from a New Hampshire address.
I got a check for $2,490.89 and was supposed to transfer funds. The check was from "Motor Technology Inc", a Pennsylvania company that "Paul Johnson" didn't seem to be associated with and M&T Bank. Definitely didn't deposit the check. I'm keeping it intact until I can report the case.
I've still got copies of all the emails he was sending me. I just want to know how you report this kind of thing.- Caller: Motor Technology Inc
- William replies to ByronJ| 1 replyYou can give the check in the envelope it to your local post office postmaster, as this is mail fraud and a felony.
Or you can give it to your bank and let them give it to law enforcement for investigations. A stolen check is more interesting for them to investigate than counterfeit checks, or checks written for non-existent banks. - ByronJ replies to WilliamAwesome, thank you. I just reported this guy to the FTC and the Postal Service. I'll probably take it to my bank sometime this week so they can send it along to the right people.
- KentrinaS| 1 replyHello and I am so thankful I found this! I applied for a position on Craigslist as a Admin. Asst. I received an email from a guy named Christopher Ceaser telling me I would have a task in a few days...So a few days passed and he tells me a check would be arriving and once it arrives to let him know and he would tell me what to do next. Also tells me that he will pay me $300 for doing said task. I am supposedly waiting on said package to arrive now....So what should I do now?? I have been trying to get this guy to give me more details because well I am not stupid I know when something sounds "off". Also, as others have stated it started out with email and now the cell number. I do not want to get in trouble for this so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!

Remember to return here, to 800notes.com, after you look at any of the information at that site. - Breanna TWow! So glad I found this. I responded to his post on craigslist and it seemed too good to be true, plus, one of the emails he told me I could reach him at seemed weird; it was something like employmentopportunitiesss@yahoo.com. He's contacted me the past few days telling me my "task" would be given to me tomorrow. I decided to check his phone number to see if anyone else has encountered this man, and surprise, surprise, it's a big fat scam! Thank goodness for 800notes!
- ShellyI have been contacted by this scammer and another in the recent week. The check should be arriving today and I have already drafted an online tip to the FBI. I have both of the cell #s I've been contacted by and all of the emails. Since another individual has already reported this to the FTC and postal service, I will report it the FBI once the check has arrived. Beware Everyone!! I knew both of these were scams as soon as I received the initial emails from them both wanted to get as much of a paper trail as possible to hand over.
