Got a call from this number, the caller ID stated Department of Defense, which, being former military, I realized was not true because it wasn't a D.C. area code.  I called the number back and it appears to be a cell phone and the outgoing message did say "Department of Defense".  When the phone rang and I answered they hung up.  Sounds like a scam number to me.

Called my phone on 15AUG07 at 7:30PM EST. They left no message and when I called them back the voice mail box was full but identified it as "Department of Defense". Of course the problems with this being it's from a Chicago area code, no one in the gov't works past 5 and it appears to be a private cell phone number, which would make this more than likely some sort of scam.

Well, it looks like they are still doing it - got my call on 1 Oct 07 at 7:50 PM - not a nice thing to see on your caller ID when you have family in the military. They even ask for my husband by full name and rank. Sure hope somebody will get these people.

Received a call from this number but missed it and I called it back and it was a regular voicemail from a cell phone. But by reading all of these reports I think they were trying to get in touch with my husband because my husband puts my number in some forms by mistake since our numbers are close together. THIS REALLY IS A SCAM! Why do they target military? When everyone in the military knows they do not ask for personal info over the phone!

Received a call from a female asking for me and she said she was from the "department of defense" and she was asking for my new pcs. Shouldn't they know my new pcs if they're the ones who process it? What a bunch of BS!!! I tried to call it back with my chain of command and as we figured there was a voicemail saying "DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE"! There's a lot of more scams targeting military.. so we all have to be very careful!

    Again
Female called asking for my wife.  She stated she is with Tri Care.  Said she will call back later.  2 minutes later a telephone surveyor calls asking if I have time to take an energy survey. My response is no since I happened to be on the other line with tri care customer service only to find out tri care is closed on Saturday.  Hmmm.  Called the number back and got the message (message box is full) and a males voice stating Department of Defense.

We have a dual military service family - so when a DoD number came on my caller ID earlier today, it made me nervous.

I tried several times to get a response when I answered the phone but to no avail. The call disconnected.

Same as everyone else - when I attempted to call back, I got a full mailbox message for no specific person, just DoD.

    WTH is up with that?!

I got a call at 1742 on 24th of Nov. I didnt hear my phone ringing so I didnt answer. When I called back, it said Department of Defense. My husband is in the Army, my father is in the Army, and my brother is in the Army. And my brother was hit by an IED and he is in Germany in comma. I freaked out and I was trying to figure out if anything bad happened to my brother... But I found it really weird... Why would they call me from someone's cell phone and why would they have thier phone turned off?? Gosh, I am about to call sprint to figure out who the hell called me....

Wow!! This is exactly what happened to me. I thought why would the DoD call me from an Illinois cell phone. I am also active duty and was wondering what the hell. I called them back and all I got was the voicemail which was full so I couldn't even leave a message. Definately sounded like a scam to me and thats how I found this website.

We heard the phone ring and it was dead when we picked up.  I checked the caller ID and it said Dept of Defense.  I felt something was up so I googled the number and came up with this.  I did not call back...

Hopefully no one is taken by this scam or whatever it is.

Missed a call from this number.  Caller I.D. said DoD.  I freaked out since my husband is currently in Iraq.  I called back several times and each time I got the voicemail.  I wanted to leave a message, but the voicemail box was full everytime.  I googled number and found this site..

    Hey
Received a call on Monday but we were not in, no message left. My younger brother answered the phone last night when they called and the guy identified himself as George, he then stated "I can't do this" and hung up. We called back and it was the same as the above complaints, cell phone, voicemail message full, and a man saying it was the Dept. of Def.
