I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone.  US mail only.   IRS does not file lawsuits.   Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter.  But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters.  90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively.  IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes.  IRS has no powers of arrest.    If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job.  IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of  money.  IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone.   IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case.  No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments.  Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but  usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement.    All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals.  All  contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.

Automated voice called and said the IRS had been trying to reach me and I was to call 314-449-9390.  I heard something about scams on the news and did not call them but I'd like to find out who these people are and have them arrested.

I just experienced this as well. Very upsetting. Called and had me were worked up saying that I owed money on my taxes from 4 years ago. Asked if I had a lawyer present and they said that if I didn't pay they could put a hold on my house, credit card, car, etc. They kept using my maiden name and were very pushy and rude to say the least. The man called himself Officer Jerry Martin and he gave me a case file number and transferred me to the person who asked if I was willing to settle or if I was going to fight this.   I told him I needed to speak with my husband and he hung up on me. I can't believe there are people like this.

Scam. I effed with them too. I had a little free time so I kept calling them back and screwing with them. They started hanging up or they would let it ring and ring and ring and then pick it up and hang up. One thing I learned about the scammers is that they do not want their phone line kept busy, so if you keep calling them I hate that because that line is a money  line. Sometimes I just blocked my number, and sometimes' I didn't. Hell, they  already have my number. After some fun with them I blocked their number.

I received four calls today from +31 444 99 39 0 saying they are IRS filing a lawsuit against me, and that I need to call them back.  It is an automated call.  I know I do not have any problems with the IRS, because I am paying tax payments through direct deposit, and I haven't missed a payment.  Has to be a scam.

I was left a voice mail stating to call this number.  When I did, they asked me for my cell # in order to pull up my record.  Stated that they had done a tax audit from 2008-2012 and that I owed money.  Then they asked me for my current address.  If this were truly the IRS, they have my correct address.

Robot voice called for nobody (without any name) "We have been trying to reach you, this call is officially a final notice from IRS - Internal Revenue Service blah blah blah. Believe me when I say if the IRS is really looking for you they will not need to use a robot voice to call you...and they will send a love letter first. Just the way the message was so awkwardly worded was the foul stench of fraud...and someone with a language barrier...

The DNC does not apply to debt collections of any kind. Its for telemarketers aka sales & service calls. It won't protect you from criminal extortion calls foreign and domestic or illegal, sales, criminal calls of any kind either.

Do consider getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $40.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.
