[Scam] US Government Grant Department Fraud

I got a call from a guy with an accent who claims he is from the US Government Grant Department and that I won a grant that amounted to $9200 and that I could use it towards anything. He gave a confirmation number and this phone number 315-636-0795.

I called the number. I asked him what particular grant did I win and how did I qualify. He said I won a December drawing from 1700 applicants and that I qualified because I didn't have a criminal record and that I paid my taxes on time(even though I never filed because I never held a job before) and that they were calling to verify my identity since all they had was my name and phone number. He then asked me for my name and address (he just said they had my name) and while doing this I googled up this supposed department and found red flags all over it.

He then asked me what form would I like to receive my money and I mention Visa or MasterCard and then he asked me for my MasterCard number. That solidified that this was a scam and I told him that I wanted the money in PayPal. He pushed for MasterCard so I gave him the info to a defunct college debit card that I had laying around.

He pulled up a fake confirmation number and said that if I didn't call his manager right away that I would lose my grant. I called his so called manager who goes by "Brandon War" according to the guy and got a message saying that he was busy and that his inbox was full. I would later on call the guy who started this and got a inbox full message as well.

I then reported the incident to the the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Inspector General through phone where the automated messaging pretty much said that they would never give grants in the way this guy tried, reaffirming that I was right.

After the reporting was done, I followed their advice to call and alert the bank of the card even though it was defunct. The bank confirmed that no activity has happened to the card and reaffirmed that the card was defunct and tied to no accounts.

From what I can gather from past reports, these scammers would gather card numbers and then charge them and the person would never received a dime. Do not give them any card info, unless like me you are using a dead card. They just want to steal money and with college students pressing hard for money, its easy to prey upon those needs.

    [SCAM]

A female with a strong Indian accent called my personal cell phone stating that I was "randomly selected" for a Tax Relief check of $9,200 from the Treasury Department.  I listened to the lady who was nice enough but stated that this "once-in-a-lifetime-offer" would require me to phone back another phone number.

After quickly checking the phone number through some sources of mine and also discovering the above post I called the lady back.  I allowed her to continue trying to justify how lucky I was in a very similar way to the post above by Deepak.

Then I asked her about the number coming back to a fraud/scam.  She immediately became belligerent and rude.  I asked her where she was calling me from and she stated that she was calling from "Mother F****r".  I found this to be entertaining since I called her back from a work telephone number I immediately put the phone on speaker and me and two other co-workers then began acting like a red neck family.  Quite entertaining for us to listen to her try to call us names.

Not saying you have to be rude back to her, but I don't tolerate these scammers and enjoyed laughing at her call me names over the phone because we called her out on the scam.

Do beware and give them no personal information.

The exact same thing happened only they wanted me to go to Walmart and age a card.  When I asked why they could not send a check, they hung up.

I just received a similar call from an unknown number to my cell phone from someone claiming to be with the Grant Department offering me a $9200 grant, free of charge that never has to be paid back.

The lady was nice on the phone, insisting I call back this number (315) and giving me a grant number that I would need to have. Knowing all too well (No I have never fallen for one) that this was a scam in the making I did not bother calling back and simply started googling for similar incidents. Sure enough I have found this page, among many, stating that all have received similar calls.

Unfortunately, because I'm in college and struggling, I fell for it. He went by "Austin Saki." They even went as far as using one of the scholarship organization names that I signed up for a little while ago, which is why I believed it. I came across this article a little too late. As soon as I did and he called back, I told him jay I believed it was a scam, and that I wanted nothing else from him. Now he's telling me that he's going to tell his lawyer, and I have to pay the cancellation fee to his lawyer or I'm going to have to deal with him legally (which doesn't make sense if he is apart of an organization, so he told on himself). Now I'll be waiting on his call talking about his lawyer so that I can tell him about mine, which is very good by the way. Hopefully, I can find a way to bring him to justice for preying on those who he knows are struggling. Thank you for posting this so I didn't lost anymore money. This was a learning experience.

I received a call from # 347-746-9977.  The guy had an Indian accent and told me the same story as everyone else here.  I was randomly selected to receive a Government grant for $9200.  I needed to call the Treasury Department at  315-636-0795 and give them an approval ID to claim the money.  There was a lot of background- sounded like a normal call center with people talking in the background.  I thought it seemed like a scam.  So, immediately after hanging up, I Googled the # and found this post.  Hopefully others do the same and don't get taken by these jerks trying to steal others' money.  Hopefully they get caught!

Got a call from these guys.

Told me I was randomly selected to get a $9200 government grant because I paid my taxes and have not been to prison in the last 6 months.

All I had to do was send them a $249 Moneygram as a security deposit and the $9200 would be forthcoming within ten minutes.

Have a feeling I would be standing at the Moneygram counter for a long, long time.

I received a phone call from 315-636-0795 and the guy had an Indian accent and told me that I was chosen from 1500 people in my area and because I paid my taxes, was not eligible for bankruptcy, and had not been to prison in 6 months that I was being given a $9,200 government grant that never had to be paid back and all I had to do was use it for paying bills and good things and gave me a Grant ID#  and told me to hang up and call the same number back.  Well, I call the number back and the guy, also Indian, instructed me to go to Walmart and when I got there call the number back and follow instructions while staying on the phone.  He then went thru the whole thing about the grant and said I would have to pay $297 to get the funds but it would be on the return funds $9200 plus the $297 in a few minutes.  This guy that called me gave me a name of Nick Logan.  I am in the process of reporting it to FBI.   Don't fall for it.

Just received this same call a few minutes ago.
They are very rude and persistent people. I knew it was a scam from the moment my phone rang.
They called from a blocked ID, and while I have never received a phone call from a government agency before, I don't think they would block their number. He stated he was with the U.S. Treasury Department, but could hardly speak any English. He told me I was eligible for a $9,200 grant because I had not filed bankruptcy in the last 6 months and paid my taxes timely. I tried to tell him multiple times I was not interested and he kept saying "But ma'am why would you turn down free money, why are you not interested?" and I simply told him it all seemed sketchy. He then told me to call his "senior account manager" at 315-636-0795 and give him my confirmation number. To humor him and get him off the phone, I wrote down the information but never called his "manager" because I went straight to Google to confirm my suspicions.

Just received the same call. A woman with bad English and a noisy background. I just let her go through her spill and that's it. I'm not that dumb to believe I won free money. Stupid scam artist.
