Caller said he was from Inidana University and conducting a public opinion survey. When I said no thank you, he persisted, which was annoying.

They somehow got ahold of my cell number and have tried calling me a dozen times over the weekend. I do not need additional charges to my phone and do not answer after recognizing the number. Hopefully, they will give up. It is annoying.

I work at the Survey Research Center at IUPUI and we're calling to conduct legitimate social science research. If you do not want anyone calling you again from that number, just say "Please take me off your list". If it's a cell phone, tell them it's a cell and you won't receive the call again. All the phone numbers we call are usually randomly generated sample based on known operating prefixes. No one wants to sell you anything or get your personal information. You're welcome to call the number back that appears on your caller ID and if you don't get a live person, there is a message telling you why you might have been called and you can leave a message. Someone will return your call if you leave a phone number and name. I still can't understand why people call back an unrecognizable number and ask if we called for them. My favorite is I pick up and say "Survey Research Center at IUPUI" and they say "What's this?" Do what I do, when I'm at home and get a phone call from a number I don't recognize, I don't pick it up. If it's important, most people will leave you a message.

Got a call from this number and answered it.  Was from IUPUI doing a survey about Indiana businesses.  I own a small business in Indiana and advertise both my land line and my cell phone numbers in the Yellow Pages.  The caller knew about my business and knew my name, so it didn't seem like a random call.  They wanted to know my interest in my company taking on local and state government contracts as well as contracts with local universities.  I'm hoping my participation will lead to finding out more about these contracts.

Well, they DON'T leave messages and call every day while I'm at work.  I get a missed call from them every single day.  It's very annoying when people don't leave a message and keep calling back, especially the same time every day.  Does IUPUI not realize that there are time differences and also that most of us have to work nowadays?  If the company continuously receives no answer when they call, why not just remove our number automatically, since chances are we don't want to call you back. We're tired, we just got home from work and the last thing I want to do, especially after answering the phone all day at work, is get on the phone again and call them to ask them to remove my number!

If this is social science research, why does the person calling hang up when I answer?

skypacer: Most of the time the surveys we do are generated randomly by the computer when we're looking for opinions of the average citizen. Other times, depending on the type of surveys, the numbers are selected from a pool of a specific type of numbers that our client (who wants the survey to be done) gives us. For example, we call union workers to ask about their opinions on their union, so we obviously wouldn't call completely random people, just random people who are a part of that union. The same goes for small business owners and niche groups like that.

meeyorek: We keep calling back because there is a high change that this person will statistically eventually complete the survey with us. We are only allowed to call a certain number of times, and this amount has been lowered thankfully. We always try to get a new pool of numbers so we're not calling the same people constantly, but that depends on the sample/pool of numbers we were given. The only way we are allowed to stop calling is if you tell us to or we've called you the max amount of times, there's nothing we can do about it. You'd have to talk to legislators about getting laws changed, which would be unlikely since this is how a lot of research is conducted.

I'm starting to receive these calls as well. I politely told the person I don't answer survey calls on my work cell phone while I'm at work.  The cell phone is not a published number, so I'm not sure how they reached me but I would like it to stop.

I called them last week and asked not to be called on my cell phone. What do you know...I received another call today on my cell phone. I called them again and asked to please not call my cell phone and now you can add my home phone also to that list. I said I can not believe you call everyones cell phone and he told me that they can because they are conducting research. How annoying!  

The questions asked were quite obviously from a racist viewpoint, and I find it hard to believe that Indiana University is sanctioning such an obvious survey that sounds like it was commissioned by the Tea Party or Fox News!
