323-375-8732 call from Mark Johnson. Said he was from "Legal services at the Dept of Treasury". He said they sent 2 letters... yeah right.. I never got them. If its from the Feds, they send certified mail that needs a signature. This is a phishing scam.

Dont give them ANY information at all!!!! Just hang up. Its a scam.

Same here....Left a voice message saying his name was Mark with the "Department of legal affairs of the US treasury"...yada yada yada....very important issue....regards to some law enforcement actions....This has SCAM written all over it.

They called me twice with that, and they just called me today .., I told him to go head and speak because me being a retired detective that I did my background check on there number and called the Treasury Dept and had no knowledge of this number... So I told him to talk then had my son get on after a minute and say we have traced the call... Wow how fast they hung up they are probable running now.., lol

SO.. what information were they asking for? Social Security number? bank account number? paypal account???

This is a scam.  They called my house and told my wife I was being included in a legal matter through the Dept of Treasury.  Luckily she didn't give the caller any information, but said she would have me call him.  I googled it before called and found this forum, and knew it was a scam.  I blocked my number and called them back.  It sounds like someone at an Indian call center that answers.  They say they are the "Legal Department of the Department of Treasury" and immediately request your name.  I refused to give the guy my name and he told me I was disgusting for calling with a blocked number and hung up on me.

As a CPA, I can attest to the fact that this kind of thing happens very regularly.  I suspect that with the recent data breaches, they will happen with more frequency.  The IRS will never call you as their initial contact.  Any time you get a call saying they are from the IRS, tell them you will call back.  Don't ever call a number they give you.  Hang up.  Go to irs.gov and find a contact number there.  Don't let these criminals get away with stealing your information over the phone.  These people don't seem to be very good at what they are doing, but many are.  Never tell them anything!

Received a call today from Roy Burnett from the Department of Legal Affairs. Said that I should get a lawyer when calling back because I was involved in some legal action.  It was very hard to understand him through his thick Indian accent.  He requested me to call back 323-375-8732.

"Kevin" at the Department of Legal Affairs just left a msg for me. How nice of him! Regrettably, it was difficult to understand the whole message due to Kevin's heavy Indian accent. The call came from a spoofed number.

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

2) Help kill their phone lines but not by calling them back directly (the number may be spoofed and repeat calls by you may - under exceptional circumstances- amount to harassment). The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427).
