A man asks for me by my first and last name and asks me if I have legal representation available and I ask whats this about. He says he is from the Legal department of the IRS and I haven't paid my taxes and that he mailed me three times notification in the mail. He asked if I lived at an address that I had moved from six years ago. I told him I don't live there anymore. Then he tells me that his data base is messed up and it needs to be corrected. My first impression was this is some fraud in some boiler room operation and I wasn't sure. So I gave him my PO box to mail any correspondence and I will respond. I'm not sure if it was a scam or not. I'll be checking my PO box. My friend said the IRS would never call up like that.

Scam call with a story that there is a legal action pending before a "magistrate." (What's the second clue - after the heavy accent - that this is from a foreigner and completely illegitimate?) Leaves messages with this call-back number. I called and it sounds like a call center, mostly likely offshore.

Yeah. This guy called and said he was from the Treasury dept.  He had the whole plan worked out.  He got $3k from a family member today before they realized it was a scam. [***] this guy. If I find him, he's in for a world of pain.

After receiving info that this person called my family home asking to speak to me I returned the call where a man with a heavy Indian accent accused me of owing the IRS money from taxes 4 years ago... He informed me that there was a warrant out for my arrest and that he had sent many letters to inform me. I totally freaked out and after asking him over and over again to please transfer me to someone who I could understand, because his accent was so thick I hung up. Next thing I knew I got 2 more calls from an unknown 911 number where a woman this time told me I had to call him back in within 45 mins... (She was also Indian)... My dad insisted that I not call back and that it was a nasty prank. Now I'm pissed! Lookout!

My mother received a call from a "Mark Johnson" with the Dept of Legal Affairs, US Treasury. He wanted to speak to me and asked for a phone number. She asked what it was about, he replied, "well, it was legal business and he could not discuss it with her". So, he asked if she would give him my phone number, she said NO, it was private and hung up on him.

I came home to a message from some idiot with an Indian/Hindu accent today.  Same story as previous posts.  he was from the IRS Legal Dept.  I called the number back because I knew it was a scam.  I don't have any issues with the IRS.  When they answered I told him that I received a message from this phone number.  He asked what number I was calling from and what my name was.  I told him that he already had that information since they called me and left a message.  My next words to him were "I know this is a scam and I am taping this conversation"  He hung up on me and when I called back no one answered.......hmmm, funny how that works when they are caught in a lie.....

Do consider getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $40.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.

I got the same call on May 8.  I had 3 claims against me. The person claimed that I did not file my taxes on time and that I committed tax fraud. I failed to respond to a correspondence that was sent to me. Also suggested that i get a criminal lawyer and that my accountant cannot fix the incorrect tax that was filed 5 years ago. The person claimed that they had brought someone to my house to bring the warrant to me on the first week of April. After he read some bogus information, he asked me if I had any questions since it was the only time I can ask. After I had asked many questions, he became agitated and hung up.

    Hello.
I just received a call at 4:10 from a "James Harris" that had a Hispanic accent who claims to be a paralegal for the US Treasury Legal Affairs office located at 300 N Los Angeles.  The man had my first and last name and correct address. He says he is from the Legal department of the IRS and I haven't paid my taxes or have some tax fine and that I was mailed three notifications in the mail. One by certified mail and they need my attorneys name as they are filing legal action against me for tax issues.  I knew this was a scam as I am a law abiding citizen and always file my taxes on time and correctly as I am also an accountant and am very careful preparing my taxes and do not have many tax deductions.  When I pressed the guy for info and asked him to mail me the info he said they already had and this phone call was the last chance.  I said bull the feds are required to send a certified letter and it is apparent that you have the correct address therefore if three letters were sent I would surely have received one of them and you are saying you can see that there was no response or apparent receipt of these letters which again would not allow the fed govt to go to the next level until they had received confirmation of my notification as they could send it through a process server so this is a scam.  I asked for the number of the IRS contact.  He gave me Mark Johnson US Treasury Inspector with Legal Affairs at 323-617-3802.

Total scam.  Originates in either India or Pakistan.

I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone.  US mail only.   IRS does not file lawsuits.   Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter.  But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters.  90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively.  IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes.  IRS has no powers of arrest.    If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job.  IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of  money.  IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone.   IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case.  No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments.  Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but  usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement.    All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals.  All  contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.
