A man called my mother pretending to be her nephew.  He fished for a name and said he was coming to visit tomorrow.  When he called again, we asked him a couple of questions that proved he was an impostor.  He told him so and he hung up.

Somebody called my ant in Florida pretending to be me, and that I was Vacation trip to Cancun, Mexico. This person told my ant that he had the intention to stop by in the way back to visit them. Apparently and somehow this person had some information about my family names, etc. It is very disturbing to find out that there is people out there trying impersonate me, especially pretending to be a member of my family. These people are dangerous and can commit other crimes, like getting into your banking account, credit card, or social security in order to commit fraud.

We just got robbed by this guy. He had information about the family members and called our home. He said he was coming to visit and that he had a car accident. He requested a money transfer to Mexico. Unfortunately my family member beloved him and lost more than a $1000 in cash. We reported it to the police but no further action has being taken. Let's spread the word about his criminal.

    Yes.
That scam  has been noted previously.  Too bad your family was unaware of it.

    Here is the description:

The scammer may speak Spanish, and may target Hispanics in the USA. He attempts to convince the called person that he is a relative, and will be visiting for a few days. If the called party expresses any interest, the scammer promises to call back. When the scammer calls back, he tells the called party that something happened - he ran out of gas, or was stopped by the police, or is being held at the airport, or needs money for some other reason -- he wants you to wire the money to him immediately.

If you send money, it will disappear, along with the "relative".

A man (with Cuban accent) called my home, my wife answered and he pretended to be her nephew, he gave her my family name, and stated that is from the part of the family that lives out of town. My wife did not give more information (we are the only ones in the family living out of our towns) and when she started asking him questions he immediately hung up.

This guy called saying he was from Galicia Spain, which is where my family comes from. He said that he was a cousin, I told him I had no cousins, and then he said that his name was Carlos Gaytan. I told him that I had no cousins named Gaytan in Galicia, Then he said he knew that was my married name, but that he went to Galicia from Cuba (that is where I am from) I told him which side of the family he was and He told me that his name was Juan Carlos Fernandez, (Fernandez is my mother's last name) He told me that he was coming from Galicia to Miami, and that he had a stop over in Mexico, and He was coming in American Airlines flight 1787. and he would call me to go an pick him up. I asked him if he was visiting or if he was coming to stay. He said that he was coming to visit and that he would stay at the Hilton as to not be a bother. Well, if you are coming from Cuba to Galicia to Mexico and to Miami, and staying at the Hilton, you are lying pretty bad.
Beware, he asked me for my cell ph and my work ph # too.

We got scammed too.  :  (  I also received calls from this number and another one, 331-381-0239. They called several times pretending to be family coming over for a short visit. Then they called back claiming to be in an accident, and they needed money to be sent. They asked my mother a lot of information about my cousin's family, and she unfortunately gave them the info.  I called my family to warn them to of this scam. Unfortunately we sent more than $1,000 and they called back asking for more money to fix their car so they can get more cash.  The police came over between their calls, but it doesn't seem like they will do anything. :  (

    Just Happened to Us
Yesterday my aunt got a call from a guy claiming to be her nephew. He seemed very sweet and loving, almost excessively so, considering she hasn't seen him since he was a little boy. Even stranger, he spoke with a Colombian accent, as opposed to a Cuban one. After expressing an interest in meeting her he said he would call back again.

This morning he calls and says he's on his way to Miami, and that he'd like to see her. My aunt calls her cousin, who denies knowing the guy, and so we do some digging on the internet and find this page. Sure enough, minutes later he calls my aunt claiming to have gotten into an accident. He then adds that in order to be able to see his sister in Mexico (who has cancer) he'll need $1,400.00. My aunt starts to question him regarding the holes in his story, and when finally she calls him on his bluff he hangs up.

Don't let this guy scam you!

P.S. Unfortunately, Miami-Dade police had no better advice for us than to "just hang up the phone." So obviously the guy is still out there.
