- Caller: ??
- VictimCalled and told me there was a warrant out for my arrest and 3 IRS violations against me from 2013. Couldn't understand why I hadn't noticed all the attempts at communication to me.
- TVarnCaller said he was from the US Treasury dept, and that I was delinquent in my taxes from 2012. Said it was too late to pay and that a warrant was already issued, but if I worked with them I could avoid 6 months in jail and $40K in fines/penalty/taxes. Wouldn't give me any specifics about me other than name, address, phone number. He said that they tired 'multiple' times to notify me by mail and in person, but no one was home. Threatened to end the call and have the officers pick me up every time I asked for information only the IRS or US Treasury would have. Wanted me to get a Payment Card and put the owed taxes/penalties on the card. His name was Jack Conoway, badge # 041396. Said not to worry, once I got the card it would have an activation # and Validation #, and that he only needed the Validation # . I Googled his phone number (Area code = Brooklyn & Queens, NY) found a lot of comments from others that sounded very familiar.

- CWe have a legal status that needs to be taken care of right now! From the Attorney General of state. Call now !!
- Caller: Attorney General of state
- Call type: Debt collector
- BigAState Attorney Generals do not collect debt nor do they get involved in them in any way, unless it is top prosecute the debt collector. pretending to be thenAG is probably a felony.
This is a common ploy by criminals masquerading as debt collectors who are attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this, all for an alleged or nonexistent debt. One of the tricks they use is to call your work place, friends, or relatives repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying. They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
