There is a widespread IRS (or CRA) or "tax scam" being  practiced by scammers on both USA and Canadian residents.

USA tax payers should read this:
    http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/Phone-Scams-C ... 5-Filing-Season

Canadian tax payers should read this:
    http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/nwsrm/lrts/2013/l131210-eng.html

    Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

This scam is also described as scam #11, here:

Rec'd a call from Nicki at the IRS - was extremely important that I call her office back at this number - the message said do not ignore this call or serious consequences could be taken - blah-blah-blah, checked with my CPA who directed me to not return the call - it was a scam - he also directed me to check this site and see what other people said

    Unbelievable!
I received a call also from this number moments ago...at first it kinda scared me, but thankfully I googled the number and came up with this site.  A voicemail was left from "officer nickie johnson" from the IRS...after listening a few times you can tell the message is a computer voice not a real person.  I WILL NOT be calling them back and will report this scam and block the number.
How do they even have my cell #?  UGH!

I received a call and voicemail from this number saying it was the Internal Revenue Service saying it was imperative and the issue was time sensitive to call them back. The voicemail was a digital voice, so there was no way to identify who called. There was a name given, though.
When I did call the number, the guy who answered (he had an Indian accent) asked me my name, and I gave it as my legal name Rebecca. He asked if I was Becky, and I said people call me Becky. He said I was being charged with tax evasion, that they had audited my last 5 years of tax returns, and did I have a lawyer to represent me? I asked him if he was sure he had the right person, since I pay my taxes, and he got very angry with me, saying that I was questioning the IRS, and why would they waste their precious time investigating me if they didn't have the right person? And did I think they were like telemarketers, or debt collectors, just calling anyone and making accusations to whoever they could speak with? He said I shouldn't accuse them of that without the information they had. So I said I would like to have the information, and the line went dead. I assumed the call was dropped, but am not sure now. I tried calling back again, and he answered, but he either couldn't hear me, or he hung up on me again.
I then called back a few minutes later, a girl answered, and I told her I was instructed to call this number. She asked for my name. I told her it was Rebecca .... and she said "are you Becky ...." I told her some people call me Becky, but that my legal name is Rebecca. She then said she was sorry that they were looking for Becky.... and told me to have a good day.
I knew then that they couldn't be the IRS, because they would have my legal name and SS#. They had to be shooting in the dark, hoping to con me into sending money.
I think they realized they weren't going to get anything out of me, and that's why they said they had the wrong person.

Just saying: Don't ever call them back. Then they mark you as a "hot target". You get more phone calls from spoofed (fake) phone numbers trying to sell you and scam you than you ever thought possible. If it was on your cell, save it to your contacts as "Scam" and block it. Then the next time someone calls you like that, save the number to the contact, that way they are automatically blocked. :) Hope that works for you.

I received a call from this number.  Woman provided the name Jennifer Williams.  She further provided badge number 41263.  I was told that I was facing 3 criminal charges related to tax evasion, and the deficit for tax years 2012 and 2013 was specified in $.  My case number was given to me and I was encouraged to consult with my tax attorney immediately as the case was being reviewed TODAY in my "local" courthouse.
