I spoke with a lady calling from this number. She claims that she is with a debt settlement company looking to pay a debt I supposedly owe for magazines. I spoke with someone in April about this alleged debt and was told that I could pay it off immediately using a credit or debit card over the phone.I told them I would not attempt to settle any debt over a phone call, especially if I don't think the debt is mine and said debt was completely unknown to me before the call. I asked them to send me information in writing so that I could look into it. I've never recieved anything in the mail and just received another call today. This time from a female who insisted that i pay today over the phone and when I refused she got an attitude with me so I hung up on her. I'm not sure at this point whether it's a scam or not but I refuse to give my information over the phone to settle a debt I know nothing about.

If they won't (or can't) validate the debt, they get nothing. It's that simple. The next time they call, tell them you are recording their conversation (legal in most states) and demand the name of the company and a mailing address to dispute the debt. If they refuse, let them know they are violating the FDCPA by refusing to validate the debt and intend to take legal action against them if they continue to pursue you for an unvalidated debt.

I received the same call. Also saying I owed for magazines and they would settle for less. I said I would not pay anything over phone . They claimed they would email me ( as I was on phone) , I receives nothing. They then claimed they would mail me something, after she informed me she wasn't going to loose her job over 100 dollars. It was definitely odd

Third party debt collection is governed by the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) http://wwou w.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf  Section 809 describes what the collector must provide you by law at initial contact (your caller failed to do that) and what you can do to contest it. Don't pay unless unless they can prove to you in writing that you owe the debt and give you a chance to dispute it. You must dispute in writing by law, just telling them that you dispute it won't work.

i just got this phone call about 15 mins ago. it was from a woman who said i owed 88 dollars for some magazine i was making monthly payments on back in 2003!! i told her i never made any monthly payments to any magazine ever. she responded by saying that they took the payments directly out of my bank account and thats why i might not remember. she couldnt tell me what magazines i ordered or how to get in contact with the people i owed the debt to. she even had the nerve to say " Sir do you think i just pulled your name out of thin air?" hahaha. i stay on top of my credit so i asked her why it took 9 years to go into collections. thats when she got an attitude with me so i told her to email me whatever information on this debt she had for me, and if it was legit i would pay it. she said she would, and that it would be in my inbox in 2 mins. here i am 20 mins later.....(checking my inbox again)..... Nothing. SCAM!!!!!!!!!! The name of the company i "owed" was Readers... something

Fail. Zombie debt collectors it sounds like. They called and didn't leave a message. Called them back and it made weird noises, then my caller ID said it was a Florida number, a guy answered and said "Hello, Julie?" I hung up (I'm at work, and usually when these kind of numbers get a return call it goes to dead air or an invalid number message) so maybe I will report back later if I talk to them. Clearly they have caller ID if they knew my name upon picking up the phone - it was pretty unprofessional though. Usually companies answer with a standard greeting and thank you for calling.

    good try!
yea they keep callig me and i dont answer random numbers. they wouldnt even tell me who they are or what they want, so this time i called back and sat on the phone and this lady literally said "#name.. #first last name.. Well you can call and sit on the phone all you want but we are going to keep calling and keep calling until you answer. so you have yourself a fabulous night Ms. #name. we will keep calling, so you mine as well answer and not call and sit on a dead line!"   all with the nastiest attitude i have ever heard from a "company". AND IT WAS AT 9 PM!!! i mean.. even REAL bill collectors dont get attitude, cuz they wont get paid! lol. i googled and googled and its like "great american readers" and they ARE a scam. took it to the lawyer of my company and he researched them- they are not even apart of the BBB.. so they literally have NO legal rights. IGNORE THEm. DO NOT PAY THEM. total scan.
