This number called my home on 9-10-14. Instead of a name identifying the company the phone number was added in its place.

Called at about 9:30 am 9-11-14.  
Let the answering machine pick it up.
You could tell it was a computer dialed call because the answering machine starts talking immediately.
Someone who is already on the line would hear that.
Someone who is letting a computer dial numbers, there is a short time interval for the computer to let them know there is a live line, and they would not hear the answering machine message.  
He did not hear the message.
Then in that bright cheerful voice we often hear, the guy comes on and says "This is STAN.  How are you today."

Called but does not say anything

Slow to initially respond, clearly an automated system, started advertising an automated home security system for free for advertising.

More spamming azzholes. This is getting real old FTC. I pay my taxes, I demand some relief.

What options does one have to defend against intrusive callers?

• The Do Not Call list (Federal or State)
Works, but is effective against ONLY "legitimate" telemarketers.  Political callers, surveys and some other callers are exempt.   Scammers, spammers and criminals ignore the DNC list.

• Shouting, screaming, swearing at the caller
Nope.  Does not stop calls.  May make you hoarse, and will disturb nearby people.

• Call blocker app, device or service
Could be a good choice (even though the scammers can use fake phone numbers), and some apps are free!
Google "call blocker" for more information, or check your favorite online sales site for a list.

* Your phone provider may also offer blocking services.  Check their web page for information.

If you cannot use any of the above defenses, then:
• Do not answer calls from unknown numbers ... let them go to voicemail or answering service
• Do NOT return calls from unknown numbers!  All that does is verify your phone number!  And, in some cases, those return calls may cost $20 or more to complete.

• If you have a "dumb" cell phone, assign the scammer's number to a group named "scammers" (or similar).  Then, assign a silent ringtone to that group.

This is a new spam caller for me also, called 9/18/2014 @ 10:05 am.  Also 212-334-5780 from New York called.  There is no history here on 800notes about this number. Anyone know who this is?

When I get a person on the phone I answer Lake County State's Attorney Office.  Rarely do they call back.

They just called today. AGAIN.
Very annoying.
Anymore, if I don't recognize the number, they're getting the answering machine.

Unwanted callas.

9/19/2014 @ 6:13 P.M. called here, answering machine picks up, does not say anything!  I keep getting these ROBO calls from all over the U.S. with long-distance area codes! We are on the Gov. Do Not Call List! Very annoying!

Anymore I just leave my fax hooked up to this line. Check the call list after work and return call to friends or family. They all know....

As other have reported, it is an unlawful (for those on the DoNotCall.gov list) robocall for some advertising & security scheme.  EXCEPT this: The voice is completely digital voice response.  I just kept saying Hello and the responses varied assuming typical responses.  

This caller rang only once and hung up immediately. Left no messages. The ID displayed 360-633-9277 as the name of the caller and phone number.

You don't have to scream until your hoarse. Get yourself a good load whistle. Your smoke detector will also work just fine. When the idiot starts talking, blow the whistle into the phone as hard as you can or put your phone next to your smoke detector and hit the test button. That will be the last time that idiot will call you. If you really want to have some fun with them, set your phone to not broadcast your number. Call them back. Get a real live person and repeat the above procedure. If everyone did this, there would be no more of these calls. Much better than the do nothing DO NOT CALL list.
