    It's  a scam.
    The IRS never calls first!
An official notice from the IRS comes by MAIL, not a phone call out of the blue.
There are various posts all over 800Notes about this scam.
Block future calls if you can.

    It is certainly a scam.
I got two very near identical messages, automateds at that that I was being sued by the IRS from:

    1-202-559-8110
    and
    1-360-861-4613

When I called the former, I got a guy who ID'd himself as the IRS with a heavy Indian accent and asked me for my name.

I got off the phone and called the IRS number and got a recording about an ongoing scam being played out right now.

That's what I have so far.

Got a call at 7:50 am from 270-319-0000 claiming "this was officially a final notice from the IRS, Internal Revenue Service."   "The reason of this call is to inform you the IRS is filing lawsuit against you." Such bad grammar and a major scam!  I was told to "call immediately on their department number 360-861-4613." I reported the call to the FTC - FTC Complaint Assistant

received two calls.  One saying to call 360-961-4613. And the next day told to call 360-861-4117.   Automated voice saying IRS is suing me.    Not buying it.    It's a scam.

These are criminal extortionists operating in overseas boiler rooms using VOIP to alter their identities and locations and out of the reach of US law enforcement.

If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.

By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.

Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.

They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.

Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.

The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.

If you get what you suspect is a scam call, report it to TIGTA through its Web site or call 800-366-4484.

Total scam.  Originates in either India or Pakistan.
    See:  http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Reiterate ... -Telephone-Scam

    Report them:
    http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam_ok.shtml

IRS does not file lawsuits.   Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter.  But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters.  90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively.  IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS has no powers of arrest.    If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job.  IRS does not cold call anyone and ask for money. IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case.  No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments.  Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but  usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement.    All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals.  All  contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.

received a voice message from 730-843-0000 saying they were the IRS and going to file charges against me for not paying taxes. To avoid charges call 360-861-4613 to settle up. This is an obvious scam. People need to listen not to even answer these calls. Too many scams going on and the government cannot stop these. Ignore them!

I received a phone call from a "computer recorded voice" on 04/07/2015 that said I needed to call 360-861-4613 as the IRS has filed a lawsuit against me.  They said they were calling about a case file which is not very smart because any reputable business would tell you a case file number and besides the IRS never calls you.  They always go through the mail.  I received a second phone call within an hour that said the IRS was filing a lawsuit against me for tax fraud.  This call was not as clear and the number was hard to understand.  The last seven digits of the number I was supposed to call is 861-4117.

The Sheriff's office in McHenry County IL is reporting that this IS a scam.  They have had a number of residents report phone calls from 360-861-4613.  They are reporting that a man claiming to go by the name of Alin Brown is calling their residents and claiming that they owe back taxes, and he offers several threats to the person being called if they are not willing to make payment.
