Middle Eastern sounding folks posing as IRS.... pretty poor attempt but sure they will find someone to fall for the scam.

I was told that the IRS was filing a law suit. Called the number above and someone with a thick accent said he was with the IRS in Washington, DC noting that is not the correct area code.

There is a widespread IRS or "tax scam" being  practiced by scammers on both Canadian and USA residents.

Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

So...called the # back & said my name was John Fuequet and I was extremely concerned about this alleged tax debt. Let him drone on with how much I owed ($3,050) and the years I was delinquent .
I asked if he had my name correct and spelled it for him. When he said info was correct I asked him to double check and write it down F as in Frank, U as in uncle, C as in cat, K as in kite Y, O, U.
It was quite amusing to he him go off on his tangent .......it was a slow day at work and this was my highlight...lowlight?

Automated call saying the IRS is filing a lawsuit against us.

Thanks for providing the link to the Treasury Department website.  I have filed a complaint with them.

I received a call this afternoon from the bogus "IRS" (although my caller-ID showed the following name and number:  Alessia Stewart - 720/412-5667).  I didn't pick up, but there was a message on my voice mail, stating that they had been trying to contact me (NOT).  They stated that they were the IRS, and that they intended to sue me.  They requested that I call them back (yeah ... like THAT'S going to happen) at the 360/967-4363 number.  I have filed a complaint with the Treasury Department.  If these sick people call me back, I think I'm going to answer, and tell them that my Social Security Number is B12-I16-N23-G43-O65 ... BINGO!!!  

Received telephone message yesterday from the "Irs" at 360-967-4363 claiming that this was the final notice after many attempts to contact us.  Claimed that IRS is sueing us. Left no case number etc. returned call, but no answer.  FYI. The IRS has voice mail.

The IRS mails letters if there is a problem.  No need to return the call.  It is probably from a scammer in India or Pakistan.  There is NO suit!

Received a call from 360-967-4363 claiming to be the IRS. They stated that this was final notice and that I need to contact them immediately.

These are criminal extortionists operating in overseas boiler rooms using VOIP to alter their identities and locations and out of the reach of US law enforcement.

If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.

By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.

Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.

They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.

Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.

The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.

If you get what you suspect is a scam call, report it to TIGTA through its Web site or call 800-366-4484.

I received a call from 728-422-5677 saying the IRS filed a lawsuit against me and I needed to call 360-967-4363. Same guy as mentioned above, heavy middle eastern accent. Said there was a mistake on my taxes from 2011-2013. I asked what kind of mistake and he said a mistake on my W2. I told him I did not understand the mistake please explain (very hard to understand him) the only thing he explained was there is a warrant for my arrest and I had to pay $2500. I told him I did not understand and to please send me the information in the mail. I told him I needed to show the info to the person that does my taxes. He hung up on me.

Do not worry about it, it is a scam.  If you had any tax problems you would have received a letter from the IRS in the mail.  In any event, W2s are generated by your employer and totally out of the hands of taxpayers.  If the W2 is in error, it is the responsibility of the employer to correct it and the IRS contacts them, not the taxpayer.

I received a call stating that IRS was going to sue me and that I needed to call this number. Glad I Googled the number...but it did give me a scar.

Good one.   One called me today and said he was calling about my windows.  I told them they were sliding aluminum framed windows and they were working fine, but I would like to install double glazed.    He hung up.

Total scam.  Originates in either India or Pakistan.

IRS does not file lawsuits.   Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter.  But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters.  90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively.  IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS has no powers of arrest.    If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job.  IRS does not cold call anyone and ask for money. IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case.  No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments.  Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but  usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement.    All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals.  All  contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.

IRS never cold calls.  Never asks for money by phone.  Never accepts payments by Green dot money paks.   If anybody calls you and threatens you and asks for cash it is 100% a scam.    Never do anything but block the call.
