- lisaReceived a call from these people stating that they were from Morgan and Shapior law firm. They said that I had received a payday loan back in 2008 and that the company had ran my check three times, and then turn it over to a creditor. He said that the creditor had turned the case over to them and they were calling to see were I dodging them or did something else happen. He then said that I had until the closing of their office today to come up with $545 dollars. He said that if they did not receive the payment that there would be 3 felony charges brought against me within 24 hr. Looked up the law firm, and asked if they had an office in Atlanta. The lady replied NO ma'am they only have locations in California. Please know that she said that this is a scam..... O ya one more thing the caller said his name was C. Williams.

- AmandaWe received a call from this same number earlier, funny thing is they state the caller is Mr. Miller and the law firm is Coggins and Powers, stating that if we don't give them blahblah amount of money that a certain member of our family would be going to prison for a year. Called the number and a woman answered, very rude, and at first disclosed the name of the firm, but upon us asking the name she stopped short and told us she couldn't disclose that information, and hung up when we told her that she already had, she hung up. We called back moments later and spoke with Mr. Miller himself who announced his department as processing. He willingly gave the name but then states that "He is confused as to why I am calling", to which I responded that I just needed to know the name of the firm. To which he became agitated and rude, and muttered something that seemed like an insult before I disconnected.

- Alfalfa replies to Vitalynn04The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
•is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
•refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
•asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
•exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
•Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.•Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
•Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
•Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
•Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

- Jim WMy father got a call from an Ashley Walker from Coghen & Powers. She stated he got a loan back in 2008 for $580, now fees and interest is $960. If he doesn't pay by end of business day they are sending to state department to file charges. I, his so even talked with them and was almost convinced they were legitmate, but after researching. They are scam artist. I tried to call them back to get an address to report them to someone, but no call back yet. I did right a letter to ACE Check Cashing advising them of this issue. If they got hacked, or misplaced persons personal information, they need to be SUIED! Any person who isn't aware of these people would pay the money, rather than going to jail. People be on alert.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans
Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010 FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691
— filed under: Press Release
The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.
According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.
The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.
