Caller I.D.  said PortfolioRec.   This is Portfolio Recovery Associates (PRA)  who calls every day, from over a hundred different numbers, and they never give up.  DO NOT answer, as they are rude, and will not listen, when you say the person they are looking for, does not live here,

You can see many of their other numbers here

We are receiving calls from this company stating we owe money for an old debt. I told them I knew nothing of this debt and asked them to send me something in writing stating what we owe and who to. The guy kept yelling at me and pushing me to make a payment. I told him I was within my legal rights to ask for something in the mail and would not even talk to him again until I received it. He started yelling at me and saying I was not getting anything in the mail that he was not a billing company and that I had acknowledged the debt. I acknowledged nothing other than if he sent me a statement and we owed something we would take care of it. He completely lost his composure at that point and I hung up on him.

These people are scum.  They refuse to provide anything proving I owe them a debt, which I don't.  They even filed a lawsuit a couple of years ago, then dismissed it the next day.  They call from all over the country at all hours.  Don't even try to talk to them.

    No Debt
They obviously have the wrong number. I have no debt and with a credit score over 800, I know I don't have any outstanding debt.

Number added to my Google Voice blocked number list. From now on they will get a number disconnected message.

Something else you can do.  Make up a phoney business name and make a somewhat professional message for your answering machine.  By law they can't call you at work.  Most of them will remove that number from their calling list.  I also have fun when they try calling my fax machine after they find out the only other number they have for me is work related.  Can you imagine how frustrated they must be when they realize they'll always get a fax tone at that number?  How would you feel if that happened to you.  I hate it myself when I call a number and get the fax tone. They give up on that pretty quickly too.

You should have gotten his name, company name, address and telephone number and then told him you were filing suit against his company under the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act.  Even if you don't know what it is and what it covers, they hate and fear the FDCPA.  What you've got on them is their rudeness and harassment and not accepting there was no such person at your number.  It could have been worth up to $1,000.00 to you.  The more they get sued the sooner they'll either change their practices or go out of business, hopefully the latter.

It sounds like they weren't even contracted with any company to collect debt for them since they couldn't provide any documentation.  There is a group of bottom feeders that look for old debts, often past the statute of limitations, check that out for your state, and try to collect on them.  They sound like this type of bottom feeders.

    I MAKE COLLECTORS QUIT

Hah, I've actually made fun of law firms for their employees quitting after I was done with them.  It's simple:

    1.  Be Polite.  Did I say be polite?  Yes, be polite! That refers to you as*hole.

    2.  Be calm, be knowledgeable...basically know your sh**!

    3.  Read the FDCPA.  Yes, actually really read it!  Know your rights, it's worth it.

    4.  Don't be afraid to spend an hour and send a Certified Return Receipt letter.

    5.  Send a Cease and Desist letter and that you will file suit under "blank" law for their "blank" actions.

    5.  Get a Google Voice number.

    6.  Don't answer your phone for numbers you don't recognize.

    7.  If people love you and/or they want your business they will leave a message.

    8.  DON'T BE AFRAID TO file a Small Claims case!  What the H*ll!

    9.  Declare Federal Bankruptcy, if applicable or necessary.

    10.  Make'em pay the hard way with good character, good tactics, and great legal knowledge.

    Signed,

    Debt Collector Assassin

This debt collector has started calling my place of work, my home and sent numerous letters and I can safely say, they aren't going to collect on a debt I have had disputed and had discharged.

My phones all feature call blocking and every time they call, their new number gets added to the list, their letters make for fine scrap paper once processed of course.

This is call #170 since the letter the atty. general forced them to write to me explained they had sent out the fraudulent 1099-C after they "decided to cease collection efforts" on a so-called debt they had never verfified, and cannot verify. Dumber than dirt, or just plain evil, Portfolio Recovery is a prime example of bottom-feeding pond scum mated with vermin.

Son is deployed for fourth time.  Got a deferrment on his Student Loan - but this company picked it up as defaulted and have been calling 3 or 4 times a day.  Finally talked to the person at the other end.  Was very polite and told them that son had a military deferrment.  They refused to accept it and wanted to contact him overseas.  Told the caller that he was in a combat zone and did not have to deal with his badgering.  Also advised him that he was in violation of the Soldiers and Sailors Act that protect military personel who are in a combat zone.  He got snotty and asked me what that had to do with him.  Simply told him that if he did not stop calling I would be contacting the Judge Advocate Generals office and let them take care of the problem.

Got my first call in over 4 weeks, they had changed the location of the caller and did not come across as Portfolio Recovery.  Since we knew no one in Atlanta GA, we did not answer. Guess they moved the info to a new office and new callers.  Left a message that is was "imperative" that my son contact their office ASAP.  Will need to contact the JAG office again.

It's Portfolio Recovery. They call from many different numbers which appear to be in different states. I think they call about every 10 minutes, if you're someone who's on their list.  If you want to know about these predatory debt collectors and their illegal activities, you should check out www.budhibbs.com Here's some information about them from Bud's website.  Whatever you do, do not send them any money.  Educate yourself about how to fight back and win.  According to Bud's site, "They usually cannot validate the claims they make and/or the accounts on which they are attempting to collect. They send out phony 1099-Cs and put false information into your credit files."

They are likely using hundreds of VOIP numbers in order to try and get through to you.  You can continue to block them, as one person suggested, but they will keep calling under new numbers as there is an endless supply.

Follow the advice in this thread and you can make these ***holes go away, the legal way.
