I have received several call from the following number saying there are legal actions against me for a online loan I was suppose to have done. First I did no online loan and I have proof of it but they keep calling me and threathing me with jail time and losing my kids. Get a life and leave me alone

Some Nigerian phishing artists. It's real funny having someone who can't even speak English threaten legal action against you and your family. Do not respond to the turds, once they find out your number is legit they will keep calling. Call your state attorney general and let them handle the issue. Unfortunately, the phishers are in Nigeria using a proxy number setup in Georgia. They'll eventually get rid of this proxy phone number and they'll setup a new one and do it over and over.

If you own a website with public WhoIs data, this is how they are getting your information. Fake scammers. Dont answer. They cant do anything to you.

This number calls me everyday, even on Sundays. Have no idea who they are or what they want but the number is now blocked!!

I receive calls from them daily. I don't know who they are. Yes, a debt collector agency. But are they legit or scammers? Have checked and double checked the companies I have accounts with to make sure they are all being paid.on time. So I don't get why they're calling.

There's a lot of scam & extortion going on lately! Many threads here with lots of info on this!

Section 809 of the FDCPA http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf requires 3rd-party debt collectors to give debtors written notice of debt (the key word is *shall*) :
"§ 809. Validation of debts
(a) Within five days after the initial communication with a consumer in connection with the collection of any debt, a debt collector shall, unless the following information is contained in the initial communication or the consumer has paid the debt, send the consumer a written notice containing—
(1) the amount of the debt;
(2) the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed;
(3) a statement that unless the consumer, within thirty days after receipt of the notice, disputes the validity of the debt, or any portion thereof, the debt will be assumed to be valid by the debt collector;
(4) a statement that if the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within the thirty-day period that the debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, the debt collector will obtain verification of the debt or a copy of a judgment against the consumer and a copy of such verification or judgment will be mailed to the consumer by the debt collector; and
(5) a statement that, upon the consumer’s written request within the thirty-day period, the debt collector will provide the consumer with the name and address of the original creditor, if different from the current creditor."

Ask them for written proof of the debt they're calling you about (and do not offer your address; they -should- have it if it's a legit claim).  If they do, you'll have a starting point. If they don't, odds are pretty good they're a scammer.


I know that I had a Portfolio Recovery Service calling me a few years ago about a debt that wasn't mine and it took some doing to get them to back off, but whether this is the same "company," I couldn't tell you.

They are scammers.  They buy old debts then start everyone who has that name to get someone to admit to it.  The debts they get are past the stautue of limitations.  Ignore them and don't admit to anything, because they buy old debts that are past the stautue if limitations ad there's nithing they can do to you

They have been calling for years. Never have answered the phone, the calls just go on a list with date,time and caller ID.PRA or Portfolio recovery Assos. have a lot of different numbers they use. Pathetic, trying to profit from other people's misfortune.

I'd agree with you except that I believe real vultures perform a valuable service.  These Portfolio jokers are nothing but a boil on the backside of humanity.

These are scammers.  First off when I got my phone through Time Warner, Time Warner misspelled my name so bad as to be unrecognizable and almost unpronounceable.  This misspelled name tis the person they say owes for a nonexistent online loan.  The only place this incorrect name exists is in Time Warner's records.  If I did have an online loan, my legal name would have been spelled Right.  These are criminal extortionists plain and simple trying to frighten people out of a few hundred dollars.

I had never received a call from these guys until one day I received notice that someone had tried accessing my 401K with Vanguard.  Within a few hours Portfolio Recovery called the first time and I thought it had to do with my retirement account so I answered. When I realized what they were trying to do, I hung up. I don't know if it was just a huge coincidence or if this is another tactic they use to get people to answer their phones. But they call several times a day. It's harassment.
