Cashier check Scam number associated with 412-428-5980 a PA #, goes by Richard. Contacted me via text for a product I was advertising.  I was asking $450 sent me a check for $1950 from a Northern Trust Bank/Dupage, Oak Brook, IL 60523.  Has a return address on envelope Patrick Bates, Treasure Home INc., 2909 Lower Cartecay Rd, Ellijay, GA 30536.  The  address is a house that is for sale.  He said he was from PA, contacted me on a different line from FL, and has a return address from GA, and the envelope was sent from North Texas.  Contacted the bank that was from IL to let them know.

i had an item for sale on Craigslist and was contacted by "Richard" from the same number. Received a check in the mail. It all seemed suspicious so I Googled what info I had and found this site. He's a scam!!!

what did you do? I just received the same thing. I was advertising a product on Craigslist and he texted from a CA area code, and just texted me from this number, so I decided to search the number. Please let me know how you handled it.

He said he was out of the country & would send his shipper to get the item.  You were to wire money  to the shipper after cashing his check.   Am I correct??

The check will bounce & you will be out of any money (he wanted the money wired by Western Union, didn't he??).

Take the check & envelope to your post office & give it to the postal inspector.  Do NOT cash the check!!!

You are absolutely right. Thank you. I will. Someone needs to catch this guy. How can he be caught. He is messing with innocent people, and people like that should be investigated. I will return the check as soon as I return it.

Should I be worried that he has my address now? I will never try to sell anything on Craigslist anymore. It's just not safe. Should I worry for the safety of my family. This is all so nerve wrecking.

The caller is probably out of the United States so there is nothing to worry about.

Take the check and envelope to the post office.  Do not return it to the sender!  You might get a nasty text from thebthief.  Just delete it.

I contacted the FBI about this same situation and the officer told me to go to www.IC3.gov and submit a report.  I did that a few days ago, but haven't heard anything...doubt I will.

We advertised on Craigslist and heard from "Ivan Wolfman" who asked us to hold item -- he would send check and instructions for contacting/paying a shipper, etc.  This was spread over about six weeks.  We have received the check today and have notified the Postal Inspector of then exam.  The envelope return address names "Peter Bates, Treasurehome, inc." of Seaside, CA.  Thanks to all who wrote here to alert us to the scam.  We are waiting to hear more from "Ivan" about sending money to a shipper.

I received a number of text from Richard , got a check for 1,900.00 for an item that I was selling on craigslist, knew right away that it was a scam, if you're not sure of these sort of things ,first of all dont be scared just do what you have to do to authenticate the check.

don't respond to any of their calls or text, let them know you know whats up with them.

I received a check but took it to JP chase Morgon bank the amount is 2230.50 and talking about coca cola bill board company photo advertisement for coca cola all I got was text message no call from them but check was counter fit now what do I now  they told me they sending me documents to sign for 1 yr contract for  20,000.00

I just was scammed by the same guy. He said he was from out of the country and was sending his twin sons to Houston to look at colleges and he wanted volleyball lessons for them. He sent me a check for my fees and money to give to the driver of his boys. I thought it was suspicious and goggled his name. He told me his name was Timothy but his return address label is Patrick Bates from Ellijay, GA....

received text and email on renting a vacation home thru Craisglist.  After multiple back and forth, his employer was paying and would send a cashiers check at this point I was already suspicious and told him I couldn't bood them because I didn't hear back,then he said they did send check already and it was for too much but he would use extra amount for his traveling. I just received check which I will not attempt to cash.  Will contact DA's office and try to get this A**h*** preying on people trying to do the right thing.
