I think that they are verifying that the number is real so that other scammers can call too.

This number called my cell phone last month for about 3 weeks around the same time every couple of days. I don't recognize the 124 prefix in this area code and a google search does not show this as a known prefix. So I think it might be a robocall. I didn't answer any of the calls. More recently, I have been getting calls from (408) 124-5895. I don't recognize this prefix either, so I haven't answered it.
