Cigna calls to talk to you about your health. It's a legit call. I just miss most of their calls because I am rarely home.

Silence when I answered the phone. Of course, I was silent, too, but whoever dialed never said a word. I suspect it's a machine dialing the number, and waits for a voice before connecting their operator to the line.

I am over 65, and insured as a dependent on my wife's employer's policy.  CIGNA is the carrier, and I was surprised to learn that WellAware is actually a subsidiary of CIGNA.  If CIGNA asked my advice, I would tell them to investigate these folks.  While they do offer some good advice, I would call them "cherry pickers", because they never call my wife who has high blood pressure and numerous referrals but they call me.  My weight is a fraction of a pound over their desired limit, and I am on medication to control my cholesterol level, so they can make a case for me, but why do they ignore the person who really needs them?  Could it be they are fishing for the best outcomes?  They don't appear to be interested in helping CIGNA.

This is a company that provides services for Health Plans like Cigna and some others. (I asked the nurse who they were)I talk to the nurse all the time and they have really helped me learn about my diabetes but i think they talk about other stuff too. She told me the calls were a BENEFIT of my health insurance. I checked and they keep the info confidential.  They are trying to keep health care costs down in this country - who wouldn't think that was a good thing? Sometimes there is no one there if I don't pick up right away, but she said they use something that automatically dials the number and if you are not there it doesn't always leave a message. She said if you don't want the call to just tell them and they will stop - but I like I said they really helped me a lot.

I also did not answer this call because I guessed it was the same people that called a few years ago that tried to give me "medical advice" for my DH on the phone.......asked them not call back since they had not personaly examed him and we were happy with our doctors and staff. If we have questions about our health we asked our doctor not a strange person on the phone:( Is this not like practing medicine without a license???

I have been receiving these calls for months.  I pick up and no one is there.  I know it is Cigna but am really annoyed that no one leaves a message or speaks to me when I take the time to pick up the phone.  My husband finally talked with a person and asked them to stop calling.  The person, Melissa assured him that no one would call back.  They then called back.  My husband and I have separate health insurance plans so they wanted to speak to me.  When my husband said please do not call again.  They said that I would have to make the request as well.. I was put on the phone and asked them not to call back.  It has been pretty annoying overall, although I do think that it is legitimate... although my husband is convinced that they are angling for a sale!

Some genius from the company is attempting to legitimize these irritating calls!

    >Most people seem to be agitated by the company's use of an autodailer
    >and/or not having any previous relationship with the particular service
    >company calling.  The calling company, service and substance, however,
    >appear alright and polite.

What posts are you reading?  No, most people are agitated by the repeated calls and the continuous denial of being unable to be removed from the list.  (A list given to this company by a hospital or health care provider via bc/bs)

The area is a little "grayed" on the previous relationship part since healthways is masking the "relationship" the patient had (through no fault of their own other than going to the doctor for care) with bc/bs and NOT healthways.  So, no real relationship exists, but your company somehow seems to think one does.

No, the calling company, service and substance have no appearance of being "alright or polite" whatsoever.  No rapport has been established with the potential customer (mark) other than a random, unsolicited phone call which, on the surface is shady in the first place, but is even more called into suspicion when "the company" can't even identify itself as an organization which is not bc/bs.

    >I let the first call go like I do all calls the number of which I don't
    >recognize. Actually received a voicemail message explaining that they
    >were providing an education service for BC/BS.  So when they called
    >again, I answered.

Yeah, right.  You are absolutely convincing me from this paragraph that you don't work for healthways and are just another random "client" who has no connection or vested interest in this organization. If there is even a hint of truth to this, there are plenty of Nigerian scammers who would love to find a person like you!

    >Had a nice civil conversation.  The woman knew a lot about my medical
    >history, i.d. info so I felt comfortable chatting.

You were not alarmed or appalled about the unauthorized sharing of your medical history with a complete third-party company?  You didn't question how she got you medical history?  You didn't ask for her credentials or qualifications? You just decided that chatting about your medical issues with a complete and utter stranger was perfectly acceptable and ok huh?

    >Said she was with
    >BC/BS (didn't make clear she was with a separate
    >company, but, heck,
    >that's o.k., she apparently is working at the >behest of BC/BS).  They
    >provide education on health conditions >indicated by submissions to
    >BC/BS.  Fine, I said, always interested in
    >learning more.

So, first the woman lies to you and says she is with bc/bs then (somehow) you find out that she isn't but then, since she works at the "behest" of an insurance company it becomes perfectly logical to establish a personal and business relationship with her. Then, to make matters even clearer, it is ok to engage in this because she received the information via a submission which may or may not have been granted for dissemination by the patient but since its for "education" on health conditions its perfectly understandable.  Uhhh, OK, fine, lets move on.

    >Gave me a BC/BS (?) number for a health risk appraisal over the phone
    >(hra's are something everyone should do - didn't take BC/BS's so don't
    >know if it's good - have taken another good one online)(check out
    >thehealthierpeoplenetwurk  org for a link).  Was told a nurse would
    >call me with more info on my condition and I would be receiving info via
    >mail (at my address BC/BS has).  Fine.  Seems solid and legit service.

Wow! you are impressing with all the jargon. What happens if someone doesn't want an "hra" over the phone, or doesn't want to discuss their medical condition with some stranger representing a company who's sole purpose is to determine the patients medical liabilities to the companies bottom line and who fronts a third-party to masquerade as a patient advocate only to receive further data which could potentially raise the rate the patient is currently paying or subject him/her to outright cancellation?  What about that?

    >The main gripe here seems to be with the calls being unwanted and the
    >use of an unanswered autodailer.  Final note, I am cautious here because
    >I don't trust BC/BS not to use any info I give over the phone as a
    >reason to jack up my insurance premium.

This is basically a repeat of the drivel from your first paragraph.  It has nothing to do with an auto-dialer and everything to do with not being harassed by unwanted and unsolicited phone calls from a company with questionable motivations in the first place.

they want to talk to me about my health, a total stranger over the phone has been given a file on me, where the heck is the HIPA law here? I didn't have high blood pressure before this call. Did I fall asleep and China finally took over? I thought we had a right to privacy. huh, I was wrong, then she thought I should verify who I was before she could discuss the reason for her call, are you kidding me? I pay Cigna premiums so they can invade my privacy.

I have the same experience as listed here.  No message left - I didn't pick up.

I am concerned that according to HIPPA laws, my insurance company is not allowed to share any of my medical information with others without my expressed consent.  If Healthways is a separate company from CIGNA, why would they have any info about me.  This is a red flag folks.  Be aware!

This is the beginning of Big Brother Medical Health care.  Insurance companies made my employer use this service on the guise that it is for the employee's health.  It is about charging higher rates to anyone who has a condition and to try to only insure healthy people.  Our premium continue to rise and they start dumb services like this to get you healthy.  Isn't that your doctors and patients job.  I find it annoying that every few months I get a phone call forcing me to talk about my health to a stranger in order to get keep my medical insurance.  If I don't answer the call, they can raise my deductible from $1500 to $3000.  Right now, as long as I spend 10-15 minutes on this call I get to the lower deductible.  I missed the calls for several weeks and got a warning letter that my deductible will be raised unless I answer the call.  I feel the calls gets to personal and I am not comfortable talking about my health to a stranger.  But I have no choice, but to take the call.  I can't afford the higher deductible, so I take the call. Soon they will monitor your grocery and dining choices and find a way to raise your premiums if they don't agree with your diet.  I hate the direction the US is heading.

This is not CIGNA - this is Healthways
    http://www.healthways.com

It is Healthways representative calling to substantiate CIGNA denying a claim or pre-certification.  If you talk to them, you will see your claims being denied all over the place.  DON'T TALK TO THEM... and tell your reps to pass healthcare reform and put these crooks out of business!
