- Johnny| 2 repliesSame thing happened to me. Number doesn't match IRS in bay area.
Told me they would arrest me if I didn't pay. You can't arrest people for unpaid back taxes. It's definitely a scam.- Caller: Fake IRS
- kbar replies to Johnnymy brother received same phone call today staying he has only two hours to pay $5000 or sheriff will address him tomorrow
- ce replies to JohnnyActually, if it was indeed the IRS they can and sometimes do prosecute. Ask Al Capone. However, the IRS would never contact you over the phone and would make every effort possible before prosecuting. Although I'm not positive, I believe that the IRS is the only entity that can actually prosecute and send you to prison for failure to pay (Federal Taxes).
- Captain Insano| 5 repliesI received a call from 415-251-6327, which caller ID identified as coming from Novato, CA. The guy claimed to be "Mark Williams" from the Litigation Department of the IRS, but he had a heavy Indian accent. I checked the IRS website, and saw that the IRS does not call about such matters (they'll always send you written correspondence). I said a few choice words to "Mark Williams", and hung up. This is a scam.
- Caller: IRS - scam
- Alfalfa replies to Captain Insano| 3 repliesWASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.
Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.
“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country. We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves. Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.
More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

- CHGot a call from this number AND from 415 690-1322, each with the same exact message except the call back number is the respective number called from. Call came on M.L.K. Holiday (January 20, 2014).
Very annoying loud beep starts the call with an indistinguishable part of a deep man's voice, then the message starts from a woman with a very thick accent (my guess is India).
Some excerpts:
"tax litigation department" (of what???)
"extremely time sensitive"
"the very second you receive this message"
"you or your recent attorney of record"
"before any legal action takes place"
"deficiency in your income tax"
"hard line" (for returning the call)
"don't try to disregard this message"
"reference number"- Caller: "tax litigation dept"

- stephen mescall replies to waI am an attorney and my client got a call from this #. Definite scam. IRS always send a letter. They never call.
- SP| 1 replyThe same experience as many of you have narrated. In my case the call came today (jan 24, 2014 from 415-323-1082) and the guy identified himself as Eric Jones and after similar stories of tax problems told me that there was a civil as well as criminal case against me. He said that he is an investigator with IRS (internal Revenue Service). I asked his office address which he gave as 450 Golden Gate Ave, San Fransisco CA94102. I asked him to read off my SSN to which he said that he had it but it was dangerous to give on the phone so he won't do it. So I said if that is the case, why does he bother to even discuss my tax problems on the phone, I would like to have it in the mail. I said whatever problem you have send it in the mail and me or my lawyer will look into it. Hearing this he said that in that case he will report my case to the Sheriff Department and get me arrested by coming Monday. I told him I will report him to the FBI and get him arrested sooner.
- Caller: 415-323-1082

- WonderWoman| 2 repliesReceived a call from Stanley Williamson claiming to be an IRS agent. Heavy Indian accent. So obviously fraudulent. 415-251-6327
- Caller: IRS
- Tami replies to WonderWoman| 1 replyI received a call today, though it was for someone else. They left a readable voice message. I called back and it was an Indian accent man stating I called the IRS and that they are unavailable at this time and to leave a message. The voicemail box is not accepting calls at this time is what it said at the end. Reading all the posts the Indian man does not know his name or gender cause the one that called a Rebecca at my number was named Grace Lee. That is definitely a woman's name. LOL! Oh the stupidity of people. I wish I could leave a voicemail stating I am from Immigration and need your green card.. That could stop the calls... Or state that I am from the IRS and you need to pay me this amount of money or I will track you down.. Haha. Some people are so stupid to fall for the scams.... Seriously, if you have paid your taxes and are up to date with everything you should know you do not have an issue, unless you receive a federal letter in the mail. Anything for a dollar, is the Illegal alien way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
