I received a call from this number and they say I owe back taxes. Heavy Indian accents, really?!! Funny thing is, I gave them a fake name, Jessica Johnson. Ok this is such a generic name but they immediately pulled up my information and could tell me how much I owe. Funny thing is, they wouldn't let me pay it. They wanted my attorney's information. LMAO Not sure what their angle is but it is not the IRS. Scam!!!

I also got the "panic call" from the "IRS". Same experience on returning it. The speaker had a heavy East Indian accent, and didn't know any salient facts about me. I asked if I could handle the matter at my local office, and he said he would connect me with "John Anderson" from my local office, then put me on hold. I figured I'd had abut enough fun by then, so I hung up.

There is a widespread IRS (or CRA) or "tax scam" being  practiced by scammers on both USA and Canadian residents.

USA tax payers should read this:
    http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/Phone-Scams-C ... 5-Filing-Season

Canadian tax payers should read this:
    http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/nwsrm/lrts/2013/l131210-eng.html

    Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

This scam is also described as scam #11, here:

I've been getting the same scam calls.  Mary Johnson claims to be an IRS Agent and will take serious action if I don't call back on this number.

Received two calls on my cell phone from this number claiming to be the IRS and for me to contact them before they "take action".  This has to be a scam.  Why call me from California when the IRS has an office in Bridgeport, CT (I'm from New Haven)?

Same SCAM outfit as the other reports above.  Two voice mails left for me on my cell, the first was Linda Johnson, who had a very thick Indian accent, saying that she is from the IRS and I need to call back.  The second was a man's voice with same type of accent.    I then called back a few days later using a different phone and a guy with an Indian accent answered saying they are the investigators for the IRS.  I didn't even speak, as I just wanted to hear how they answered the phone.  After I hung up, they called my cell phone again.  Somehow they knew that I have called, and I have never spoke nor given any information at all.  I don't know how, but they tied a land line phone from a different address to my cell #.

Calls from this number a phony calls a woman identifying herself as a representative of the IRS. The IRS will never call or e-mail you. They always write. Do not answer or respond to these calls.

This phone number has called multiple people and according to all accounts, including my own, they claim to be the IRS. When I called the number back an indian speaking male answered and immediatly told me I had a case against my name and then asked if I had a lawyer. I continued to ask him questions about what type of case, to which he had no reply. He begin to ask me for my last four digits of my social security number, to which I denied multiple times. After I asked him to speak to his superior, he hung up on me

This is without a doubt a scam

Left message from a Nicki Johnson who claimed she was from the IRS. Said I had a matter to deal with the IRS and to call back before they took action. I didn't call back...never used my name. Have no plans to contact them ever......

Look up numbers before calling anyone back. If it is true, then the number would come up along with a legitimate source. If not, most likely others have reported the bogus number.

Continue to get calls from this number.  Called it back and it's obviously an Indian call center claiming to be the IRS.

Today a Nicki Johnson at the same number left a message claiming to be from the IRS urging me not to ignore the message since it dealt with a time-sensitive issue.   When the IRS needs to contact you, the agency does so by mail, always.

Officer Johnson left a message and said she was from the IRS:  “The hotline to my position is 415-366-6646.  Don’t disregard this message and do return the call before we take any action against you.  Thank you and good-bye”.  No accent, sounded like a robotic recording.

When I called back, a man with an Indian type of accent answered the phone.  He asked why I was calling and I told him I was returning the call.  He asked my name, to which I replied, “You called me.  YOU tell ME what my name is”.  He mumbled a name and I told him that wasn’t me.

I talked real slow trying to keep him on the phone longer, (1) because I was recording it and (2) so I could listen to what was going on in the background.  It sounds like there’s some kind of filter so you can’t hear his voice clearly.

Anyway, when he realized that I was on to him, he told me F___ you. I replied, “Right back at you.  I’ve got all I need”.

Called the number back and got a gentleman with an Indian accent, I began to ask a series of questions:
    Business: Investigation division IRS
    Spoke to: Alex Brown
    Badge/Employee ID Number: 909918591
    Division Chief: ?
It was at this point the "agent" hung up the phone. So what Did I do.... I called back. This time I got someone different, however same accent and background noise.

Like one poster said, speak slowly and focus on background noise. You can hear others going through their scripted pitch.

Well after about 8 or 9 calls, yes, I began to turn the tables... why not I wasn't busy... LOL. Then a "woman" answered and said she lived in Lakewood, NJ (the area code for Lakewood area is 732 not 415) and that she was given  the phone from a friend.. and hung up again...

Now when I try calling back, sadly I get a busy signal.... guess they blocked my number. How can I "pay" them if they don't answer the phone??? I'm so worried now... oooh wait, Jerry Springer just came on... gotta go..

I again asked for the reason for this call and he began reading some affidavit that they were going to put a lean on my  property and arrest me.

I told him that I was going to get an investigator to find out why he called me.
