Julie Smith from the IRS again, last week from 415 251-6983.  Phone number traces back to Pacific Bell as the carrier in the Novato, CA 94949 area, near San Quentin prison.

Terrible scam - received a recorded, threatening message from Julie Smith 415-506-1667, claiming to be an "IRS officer", demanding a call back.  I am so fearful that seniors or other vulnerable people might be harmed by this scam.  Please advise what can be done to stop these people, and hopefully fine and arrest them.

Many of those phony IRS calls are coming from India or Pakistan ... not much we can do to stop them.
The best defense seems to be "education".  Yep ... tell your friends, neighbors and others (both elderly and the young'uns) that the scam exists.

There is a fairly common IRS or "tax scam" being practiced by scammers on both Canadian and USA residents.
USA tax payers should read this:
    http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Reiterate ... -Telephone-Scam

    Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

    Educational post:
This scam is also described as scam #11, here:

Remember to return here, to 800notes.com, after you look at any of the information at that site, either to post more information, or to let us know you avoided the scam, or to read any further information about that number that others may post.

Call blocker.  Seems to me the IRS should try to get more information out there.  TV spots.

All the cheap TV spots are currently taken by political ads (grin).

Maybe a new "reality" tv series is necessary?
"How I avoided being scammed" or "Can you recognize this scam"  (grin)

Hmmm.  Maybe that is not such a bad idea?

This is a result of the hackers stealing our bank information from Chase Bank. The bank claims that they didn't get our passwords but got our personal info which includes our telephone number and address. Be careful. They want to talk to you to trick you into giving them your account information.
