The recorded message said they "have received a complaint (about me)" and if I "want to know the nature of the complaint  call 866-xxx-xxx or press 9" my complaint # is xxxxxxx.  Very strange.  I did not call.

Called this number back and they claimed to be verifying information for a debt collector. They knew my name, number, address, and FULL SOCIAL. They claimed I owed $2000 to a company called American General Finance. The debt was incurred in 2005 however I was overseas from 2000-2009 so it's either a scam or a case of stolen identity. I tend to think its a scam because my detailed credit report shows no activity with a company called that. They offered to settle for $1500. I was told if I didn't want to settle I would get a summons to court. If I receive a summons I will update this information.

How can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:

The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.

The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.

The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.

The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.

Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
    The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.

Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
    Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
    Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.

Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.

Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).

Claimed call was about 2005 debt to Sprint. Never had account with Sprint. Had my last 3 digits of social correct but said she got that from credit report. Asked for details and told either mediate now or receive court summons. When I asked her to send me information by mail to address in credit report. She said that she couldnt because previous attempts had gone unanswered. Total BS.

They left the same message,  my husband returned their call,  he asked what was this about they said "It's a legal matter." They couldn't give him the callers name nor their companies name. My husband informed them they are calling a government number they hung up.  SCAMS.  Tip: Check your credit report monthly.  Good luck everyone.

hey called me to day, the number left was the  888 495 8227.  first time I called the number "direct line" 415-802-2986.  The lady that answered wouldn't give me much information but did read me my correct address and SSN.  After calling back the 8227 number I got more information (if you want to call it that).  They are claiming I had a broken contract with sprint that I entered in 2002 and ended in 2005.  Crazy part is I still had service with sprint a little while longer after that date.  Was told I could settle out of court by paying thru their processing department and they would forward me all info.  When asked if I could get it first was told they could't do that.  She also stated that they had an affidavit from the postal carrier saying they have delivered notices to me before, yet I never got any certified letters so not real sure how that could be possible.  She told me it would be sent to be served by a guy with the name David Jenkins.  I had asked which court it was going to be processed thru and all she would say is my local county and that I would be served with in 24 to 48 hours (I'd like to see a court work that fast).  I have made contact with my local JAG office to get assistance on this.  From what I've read this is all scam so not really worried about it, just want to make sure that my credit is ok.  Pulling all reports tonight again.

This has to be a scam when I used my credit card in sanfrancico at the pier for parking. I live all the way in alabama & went to visit family in California. We went to the pier on 2/16/15 & used my credit card to pay for parking at one of the meters. We used cash for everything else & now I'm getting a message from this number. I will be calling the city to make a report.

I got a called today from 415.802.2986 and said they had a complaint filed against me.  The number on caller ID showed California.......My reply to the caller was, "Someone all the way in California complaint about me?  That's funny, I don't know anyone from California nor I have I been to that state since 1972.  As they were looking up my so called report (not referred to as a complaint) they hung up on me.

I got a call from the # yesterday. He told me I owed money from an account in 2003. When I asked from who he told me some company I never heard of. I told him he was mistaken and he said that company took over another company but couldn't tell what the other company was previously. He started telling me some of my personal information including my entire ss#. He then told me I would be prosecuted if I didn't pay and said I needed to give him my account # so I could start making payments. Yeah Right!! I told him I needed proof of who he was and his company and to send me paperwork through mail and if it was legit I would send a money order. He then started getting rude and raising his voice telling me I've had letters sent to my address numerous times and I never responded. He said that a money order was not acceptable and it had to be done electronically. He was very disrespectful. We went back and fourth and he finally got pissed and yelled that I waisted his time and he would turn me in to the courts and hung up on me. I called the # back and nobody answered. The name he gave me was Jim Jenkins and he gave me a # and he said he was from Alternative Dispute Resolutions. I looked the company up but could not find anyone by that name. I even looked up the # he gave and it was from Memphis tn, so I looked up law firms and tried to find it too. I'm sorry but if a company is trying to collect money they will accept it in any form and a real professional would not conduct himself the way this man did. You definitely won't get money out of somebody by being rude and yelling at them. Maybe he thinks that if he scares someone bad enough they will just give up their info.
