Claimed I had a financial emergency. Tried to get a credit card number from me. I called RCMP and informed them of concerns.
They called my husband at work saying it was our former mortgage company (we got a new mortgage the DAY before). They stated that this was a courtesy call, and asked my husband to confirm his name and mailing address (as some banks do). They started to ask questions about our mortgage payments, and when my husband told the woman to call our financial advisor at our bank (who took care of paying off our old mortgage and arranging the new one) for anymore details she said "Well, I'm not authorized to speak to him." My husband thought this was kinda sketchy and asked "What is your name, and what is it that you want from me?" She immediately hung up on him. My husband called the number back which went straight to the message "The number you have called is not assigned". He then called our old mortgage company to enquire about this call, and they said they made no such call, and never call as courtesy unless someone signs up for a new mortgage from them. They were kinda freaking out that someone was posing as them and asking for financial info, they took this number and are investigating it. My husband then Googled this nuber and saw how it was associated with ID theft scams. My husband then called our bank to notify them of all this, and they said the only way that someone could get his info was through unsecured CIBC files - our old mortgage company is a division of CIBC. We've contacted the police and are meeting with them today to formally file a fraud report.
I had phone call from this number 416-784-9499 and the caller ID also said CIBC.
Right away the caller wanted to address my business account but needed to confirm my info..... I was suspicious and said let me call you instead. He gave me a 1-800 number.... I was still suspicious and said talk to my bank manager and if she confirms I can talk to you I will.
This was 5 days ago and I have heard nothing since......beware people.
They called, was on hold right away. a bit later someone answered and called be by my name a bit off though. They wanted to ask me secure info to see if it was really me. They asked me my address I gave it to them and it seemed to throw them off as I just moved. Then they confirmed my name again. Then they wanted my birthdate, I was apprehensive but later gave it to them. Then after all that they just told me that my credit was in good standing and I am not behind for any payments. I told them that this call was very suspicious, and they said that I could call CIBC back to talk to them. CIBC so far doesn't no about this number.
Called ragarding a small ommision on a credit line payment and they knew details of my account without me giving it to them. after I called PC Financial (CIBC) and they did confirm that 416-784-9499 was one of their numbers from credit
Same as everyone, #'s given NO GOOD to call back, quite apprehensive when I REFUSED to devulge any pertintent info..(except our address). YEAH !!!!!scammer's galore,we'll be watching that ph: # in the future. :-( BEWARE KID'S !!!!!
They ID'ed themselves as Toronto CIBC offices on the call I received. I waited on hold for an actual person and the system hung up on me. I tried calling back and I get a message saying the number is no longer in service. Be careful people as this has to be some sort of scam!
this number keeps calling for a few weeks now and i refuse to answer it.. when do they give up? Not sure if it is valid or not after reading the comments posted here
just rec'd a call from this number this number, claiming to be CIBC Toronto and told me to hold and not hang up, but they disconnected on me. Anyway, so then I tried calling them back on Skype but was told the number was invalid. I then decided to do a Google search and landed here... The only reason I thought the call might have made sense is that I recently visited and used the bank machine in Toronto. Because I had been a victim of credit card fraud a couple of years ago, I thought maybe this was a security check... but now I'm not so sure... Kinda weird how "CIBC" would call you and then ask you to hold for the next available operator. If it were important, shouldn't a "real person" call you instead of some automated system... Anyway, too fishy for me to believe. Thanks for the posts, everyone!!
