- Devon| 3 repliesThis is Portfolio Recovery, a collection agency. http://www.portfoliorecovery.com/
This is 2010, the last bad debt I had was in 1992, they need to get real. 18 years ago, go figure.- Caller: Portfolio Recovery
- Call type: Debt collector
- sYet another new number for Portfolio Recovery. I've never had a debt go to collections, so I know for a fact I don't owe them anything. I ran my credit score last week and it's over 800 with no adverse entries in over 20 years. I refuse to start a dialoge with these people who are obviously trying to scam me.

- KristinThis is a number for Portfolio Recovery, my cell shows record that it has called me on 11/20/2010 at 8:44am.
I also have record of rcving phone calls from 731-984-7690, 620-662-8870, 205-423-4020, 757-864-0020, 404-592-4171. They are attempting to collect a debt owed on a cell phone that's bill is over 10-12 years old. Which is WELL past the SOL.
I'm emailing, mailing them, and making a copy of information for my records. If after that doesn't work, I'm reporting them to the MN Attorney General's office.- Caller: Portfolio Recovery

- 8AM-9PM Only| 3 repliesIt's not illegal for a third party collection agency to call on weekends and holidays. It is illegal for them to call anytime before 8AM and after 9PM local time.
- suzdon't answer it! [***] just don't give up!
- helenComes up on caller ID as Sunrocket. Illegal for them to do that. I work in collections. You must identify who you are and where you are calling from accurately. I don't owe anyone any money. I have a perfect credit score. Not my fault they are too stupid to figure out I am NOT the person they are looking for. Perhaps when the Maine attorney general is done with them they will finally listen.

- Alfalfa| 1 replyHow to beat PRA (and other junk debt buyers):
1) STAY OFF THE PHONE! All they are interested in is coercing you into admitting on record that
you "own" an expired debt so it can be reaged. Just hang up. STAY OFF THE PHONE!
2) Check the last date of activity on your credit report.
3) Go to this website and check the statute of limitations for the enforcement of collection of debts in
your state: http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/statue-limitations.html
4) Send them this cese communication letter VIA certified mail with return receipt requested. Keep
copies of everything you send:

RE: [insert account number or name of account or name of debt]:
Dear [insert collector's name or company name],
This letter is in response to your [letter dated xx-xx-2005] (copy enclosed) or [phone call on xx-xx-2005], concerning the collection of the above referenced [account or date].
I do not believe I owe what you say I owe therefore I dispute this debt. I am well aware of my rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) and my state laws so I hope to save both of us a great deal of time by letting you know that not only do I dispute the validity of this debt, I have also checked with my State Attorney General and verified that the Statute of Limitations for enforcing this type of debt through the courts in (insert your state or the state in which the contract was signed) has expired. Therefore, should you decide to pursue this matter in court I intend to inform the court of my dispute of this debt and that the "statute of limitations" has expired.
This letter is your formal notification that I consider this matter closed and demand that you, or anyone affiliated with your company, stop contacting me regarding this or any other matter except to advise me that your debt collection efforts are being terminated or that you or the creditor are taking specific actions allowed by the FDCPA or my state laws.
Be advised that I consider any contact not in accordance with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act a serious violation of the law and will immediately report any violations to my State Attorney General, to the Federal Trade Commission and, if necessary, take whatever legal action is necessary to protect myself. Be advised that I tape record all phone calls and violations of the FDCPA can result in you or your company being personally fined up to $1,000 per incident.

This should stop them from calling, but will not necessarily stop them from collecting the debt. They are using the IRS as their surrogate collectors and will (more than likely) send a 1099-C to the IRS at tax time. *If you receive a 1099-C, dispute it with the IRS immediately! The IRS CAN and WILL investigate their charge-off claim and demand supporting documention. If PRA does not respond, they WILL default and you pay NOTHING.
Do NOT ignore their letters or phone calls. Dispute EVERYTHING in writing and STAY OFF THE PHONE! - MustangGodThey just called my phone yet again. They claim I have a large debt with a furniture store that I never shopped at. Not to mention it's from 1999. This makes 9 different numbers they have called me from.

- Jon| 2 repliesi got a call from the same debt collector. i see so many people on here that have no idea why some compacy would call about a debt after ten years. but not many denied they have debt. thats why we are all on here talking about a company that harrasses people for money they owe. i had them threaten me they would take me to court and that never happend yet. but how in the world is this company getting your phone numbers when you change it? its hard to get some ones cell number when they change it. and i dont understand why they do but i also dont get why people claim that goes on? i said before you should call the police about it but what are they really gonna do about it? you have to call the company and tell them in writing what is going on. they call from several numbers all the time to trick you into answering. but change your number if you dont like it or send them a letter and tell them what you tell this site. good luck.

- ChelsieI have a debt from 1987 that they are calling about. This debt was charged off and included in my bankruptcy in 1989 - the debt was discharged. I've sent paperwork, called and been threatened if I don't pay. These people are not professionals. They don't know the law and they will never stop calling. I have recently made a cash purchase of a phone on a month to month service which I pay cash. All this to avoid the threats, late night and pesistent unwarranted calls. Portfolio needs to be sanctioned at the least. Very rude, unprofessional and UNEDUCATED [***].
