the number is a telemarketer call. you can call it back and it says it will take your name off the list but needs your social security number? sketchy?

So, I called it back just to see what my options were. I got a call from the number, saying that my credit card rate could be lowered blah blah blah...
Anyway, the options they gave when I called back were, 1) remove your name for 5 years, 2) put your name back on, 3) remove your name permanently and 4) to hear details on the program. However, no matter how many times I pressed "3" nothing happened. Imagine that. So the automated woman said, "let's try again." Of course, it didn't work the next time either and she said, "I'm sorrry, but I'm having trouble completing your call at this time. Please try your call again later." How very convenient. She then directs you to their site. You're right, totally sounds like a scam...you don't need my SS# to take my name off of a call list. Just don't call my number. Simple.

Definitely a scam or attempt for identity theft.  Why can't this sort of thing be reported and remedied immediately?

Most likely a telemarketer or scammer.  Put it on my block list.  Apparently they don't respect the DO NOT CALL list.

I tested the call.  I called them back and chose "permanent removal".  I keyed "my" social security number (123456789), "my" date of birth, and confirmed I was calling from "my" home phone.  Then the automated system wanted my name and address to confirm a match for the removal...more likely a match so they could steal "my" identity.  Completely bogus.  Ignore all calls from this number.

Hey.  St. Louis Target, you need to call the FBI or at least your local police department / phone company and let them know your experience.  That is blatant identity theft.

My call was similar to the above.  To lower my rates, they wanted me to list my MasterCard and Visa account numbers.  I ended the call.  How can these things still be happening???

ID came up with Stevens Co.  I called back and got a very professional sounding recording about reaching a credit reporting service.  I hung up and blocked the number.  Done.

ps  In case you haven't noticed, the DNC list is just another example of government incompetence and waste. While I'm on a rant, The DNC law only reduces calls from legitimate companies.  It has no effect on scammers or other criminals because by definition, they don't obey the law.  As a matter of fact, it actually makes it easier for scammers to get through because people believe that the calls must be legitimate because they are on the DNC list.   Think about that if you agree with the gun control laws.   .

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

I agree that the DNC list is not effective.  You're right - only law abiding telemarketers will respect it.  However I disagree with your later comment.  Now when I get called I DO automatically assume the call is illegitimate because only scammers are going to call people on the DNC list.
