I didn't take the call, the caller hung up when my answering machine picked up the call.

This is a generic number for people calling from any State of Oregon agency.  From the Department of Revenue to Department of Human Services, all calls from an Oregon State off will come up with that phone number on a caller ID.

Got a call at 8:30am and a woman said, "This is the Oregon Department of Revenue; may I speak to [name of my late husband]? I was so stunned, I said "he's deceased." She apologized. I asked if there was a problem, and she said, "oh no." She thanked me for my time and hung up. I was immediately suspicious and I went to my phone that has caller ID and it gave this number. I am a little nervous about this.

My best friend got a call tonight (Saturday) about 8PM from this number. They asked for her by her nickname. She has no idea who the number would be, but definitely not a friend. She denied that name lived there and hung up on the guy.

Got a call from this number this morning from Gene Ebersole from Oregon Dept of Justice. He is the Assistant Attorney General for the State of Oregon. He heads the civil fraud case department. This may be a courtesy phone somewhere inside one of Salem's many public buildings. The various calls coming from this number all sound suspicious in nature. Any public servant has a desk extension and so it makes a person wonder why they would use a courtesy or public extension away from their work area. I think my call was made from this number so that it could not be overheard by coworkers.

Received this call at 2:19pm (on a Friday).
I answered the phone and said "Hello." a few times but there was silence ... sounded to me as if I had been put on hold.  After waiting about 20 seconds I hung up.

When a state of Oregon worker calls out that is the number which shows on your caller ID. Say I call 503 945 xxxx. I leave a voice message. When the worker phones back I see that number and not the 503 945 xxxx I called. It protects state workers.

Have gotten calls on my cell phone from this number before. I wasn't able to answer today's call so my cell phone indicated a missed call.  I've answered the call from this number before and remember someone asking for somebody other than me.  Having read the entries above, I'll know to disregard the number.

Friday, 3/14/08, 8:51 am

This was a call from a coworker as I was ill at home but we needed to coordinate an appointment.

To clarify the 8 Jan 2008 post from Dave, I think the state system works a little differently than he suggests. The state has a telecom system with multiple incoming and outgoing lines. The outgoing lines are randomly assigned as calls are made. It appears that the number 503-581-7668 is assigned to an outgoing line. If you try to call in on one of these lines  you'll get a message that the line is not in service.

My outgoing calls show up as various numbers, never as my direct phone number. It isn't that I make fraudulent calls as part of my job, just the way the system works.

While this may protect employees, as Dave says, I think it is primarily a function of the switchboard. The state phone network shares outgoing lines (and saves money) because there may only need to be, say, one outgoing line for every 10 employees at any given time. The down side is that I sometimes (maybe every three months or so) have to redial to get an available outgoing line.

The same situation seems to hold for various large organizations (public and private) based on calls I've received and made to others.

received call april 21 2008 at 12:29 pm from Julie from the Dept. of Revenue calling for Natasha... I told her that this was my cell # and I don't know a Natasha and never have. Julie said Natasha had given this (my) number as her home number and said thank you and goodbye. It felt very much like a scam call... I could be wrong, but if I am then Julie and her cohorts need to identify themselves fully - name, rank, full department, and the full name of the person they are calling for and the reason. It is just bad manners otherwise.

I received a call today (17 June 2008) from this number on my cell phone and chose not to answer it (I often do not answer calls from numbers I don't recognize).  The party did not leave a message and I won't be returning the call.

This number is a Salem number. It is the default number that shows on caller ID's when anyone within their organization calls out. I know it is the case with calls from the capital as well as the city and social security. I have the luck to deal with many of these people in my profession.

Got a call from this number this morning at 8. My son just missed it. This number looks very familiar to me, and there was no message left, so I called it back and it said it is a disconnected number. I messaged my sister and had her call as well, with the same results. So how did this number call me this morning?
