    It's not a gimmick.  It's a scam.

I have been getting this call for about a month but only after I start my computer.  Male says he's from Windows technical and that I am having problems with error messages.  I told him I didn't know what he was talking about, I wasn't having problems and anyway, I am not at home.  He seemed confused and asked for a better time to call back.  I told him 7pm.  No one called back until this morning, right after I booted up mu computer.  He said that he had a list and that I was a legitimate Windows user.  The whole thing sounds fishy and scary.  I am searching my programs right now to see if there's a program they may have hacked into (PBN?). Anyway, I have blocked this number.

I got this call too.  It's definitely a scam.  If you get this call DO NOT talk to them.  They want to get access to your computer so they can get personal info.  He asked me to go to my computer for him, and I said no.  He insisted that it was legit but I just hung up on him.  No one at Microsoft will be calling you, if you really do have problems with Windows you have to call them.

This arab keeps calling me. Has been for weeks so now I pick up the phone and mess with him and ask if he has stolen any planes . And if he knows what happened to the recently missing malaysia air lines flight and he doesn't know what to do. I tell him to stop calling and he doesn't. Usually I get an unknown call from him first and then after a couple un known calls I get one from this number. [***] terrorists

Yes, they call several times in succession to try and get around blockers. I have NOMOROBO, which does a great job, but will not block numbers that show "UNAVAILABLE" or "OUT OF AREA", so I also use a Teleblocker and VoiceZone Enhanced as additional tools in my countermeasures suite to get rid of these clowns. Below is the log from my VoiceZone Enhanced list showing the barrage of calls from this scammer.

I started getting multiple calls from Unknown and Private earlier this week, and decided to block them in my cellphone. These calls were not leaving any messages.
Unfortunately,I found out today that the RNs from my mother's nursing service are required to block their phones' ID when they call out. The nurse said she hadn't called earlier during the week, but I had missed her call today because I had Unknown blocked. So, I unblocked Unknown.

A few minutes later, I got a call from 505-623-8421. I didn't recognize the number, so I didn't answer it. No message was left.
I then searched the number, and found all of the reports mentioned. I happened to not be at home when I searched for it.
But, a few minutes after I returned home, and my phone resumed being on my WiFi hotspot, a call came in from Unknown. With dread, I answered it and said, "Hello, is this the Hospice Nurse?" There was no response. I said the same again. This time, a man said "yes." I said, "are you the Hospice nurse?" He said, "This is Jacob, from Windows Technical Support." (I couldn't believe this crap had actually happened to me!) I said, " I only speak to the Hospice Nurse, for calls to this number that say Unknown!" he seemed startled and hung up. But, I still don't like the idea that they now know my number is a valid one.

I tried forwarding another (rarely used) cellphone number to my line. I thought I would give the other number to the nurse, and actually be able to block Unknown / Private calls again. But, when I tested, the originating number I had called from came through on the phone that the line had been forwarded to. I figure, that means the nurse's line would still say Unknown, and if I blocked it, I would still block her, even if she called a different number that I had forwarded to my phone. I am out of ideas and pretty mad!

btw, I mentioned that I got the call as soon as my phone rejoined my home WiFi. But others said the call came in the moment they had booted up their PCs.. In my case, I.have a company owned thin client device that accesses a virtual machine over the corporate network. I have no personal PC at home. The thin client device was on and connected (but very secure) when this happened. My home network service is from Clearwire. Anyone else have that? However, come to think of it, my cellphone runs Windows 8. Hmpf.

I would really like to figure out if this scam is appropriate for a complaint to the FCC/FTC. They only investigate complaints for incidents where the person reporting personally experienced an issue or harm. Interested in others' thoughts.
this one is really bad news.i hope somehow we can stop it.
