John - 6 Aug 2008Ok...I was just on IM(instant messenger) talking to a friend who lives in Portland, Oregon...while we were talking she said she'd just gotten a call from New Brunsick(where I in fact live)...offering her a lower interest rate-blahblah-so I checked out the number-came up empty-then I started googling and found this thread-and did a little further investigating...as others have posted on this thread that were able to "call back"-the number is located in Costa Rica-NOT New Brunswick,Canada-if you google "country code Costa Rica"...it comes up as "506"-same as the AREA code for NB,Canada-It seems certain phone service provider's systems are not able to distinguish between a "country code" and "area code"(the XXX-XXX-XXXX format is unique to the US and Canada)...and if your phone shows extra number(s) on the end then its a tip off-seems ,unfortunately,caller ID systems are reading the number from "left -to-right"..hence the 506 is being read as an area code NOT a country code and occasionally the extra numbers arent even showing up-I don't have the answer but relaying the info to your service provider so they can perhaps further explore the "bug" would be a start...

Midland - 6 Aug 2008Our cell call received was from 506-220-1926 and started a pre-recorded message about a vacation. Our first EVER such teleharrassment on either of our cell phones. For what good it will do, I registered (I think really RE-registered) our numbers with the do not call registry. Very irritating!!!

SJ - 7 Aug 2008I just got a call from the +506 226 73515. I didn't answer it but i looks like someone sold our numbers. I happen to have AT&T as cell phone service. I used to work for AT&T formally Cingular wireless and we were always told to tell people that they don't sell the number to companies, but how else would the outside companies get the #. WHAT Cell phone provider do you guys have?

I called it back and got a recorded message from my cell company (Verizon) saying "The number you have reached has been changed or disconnected." Innnnnnnnteresting, since I just got the call tonight, and already they are saying it is disconnected?

JENN - 8 Aug 2008I received two missed calls on my cel phone from +506-220-25688 (one too many numbers)and I read this other message on here and thought I should post something too! Good thing I didn't answer! Seems like a scam to me. Not sure if it has anything to do with it, but I recently switched from Cellular One to At&t! Never know! Thats why I never answer calls from numbers I don't recognize, if it's that important they'll leave a message!!

pissed off someone has my cell # - 9 Aug 2008Friday Evening 8/8/08, at 8:30pm I got an automated woman's voice saying my auto insurance was about to expire or about to expire and to wait on the line for a customer service rep...curious, but knowing that it was not my auto insurance company because i get my bills on the dot in the mail each month, I stayed on the line. A young man came on the phone and immediately asked for the make & model of my car. I quickly asked him if this was Progressive. He then immediately hung up. I called the number back and it said that this number was disconnected. wtf?????!!!

JO - 13 Aug 2008Call from 506-2-215-6171 appears to be from Cosat Rica? The extra number is because this area has added a digit to their phone numbers. Some type of Cruise Line, they keep calling my cell phone.

My cellphone is already on the DoNotCall registry, so I don't think that makes a difference. Which make senses if the calls are from Costa Rica, since the caller would not care. (I did file a complaint anyway on the DoNotCall website. Can't hurt.)
My cell phone is AT&T. I notice several of the recent posts are also AT&T. I wonder if they "lost" a database of phone numbers or something.

PS - 14 Aug 2008I received a call from the same weird number with an extra digit at the end, and I called it back because my sister lives in Costa Rica and I thought it might be her. Got the same "this number has been disconnected" message. Has anyone received a high phone bill by calling the number back? Just curious. I have T-Mobile, by the way, so I don't think it makes much a difference who your phone service provider is.
