I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone. US mail only. IRS does not file lawsuits. Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter. But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters. 90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively. IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes. IRS has no powers of arrest. If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job. IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of money. IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone. IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case. No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments. Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement. All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals. All contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail. - Sarahcomplete scam! Scared the pants off my husband and I. Thankfully we had the sense to google the #.

Do consider getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $40.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.

https://www.straighttalkwirelessforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=6803&t=55006 - Jim GReceived a voice mail from 360-566-2212. When I retrieved the message, I heard the tale end of a voice mail message saying, "to get more information on this case file, please call 509-288-4624 immediately (repeated phone number). When I called, it rang for a long time, finally a woman answered saying "IRS" and even provided a badge number (SA7142). I told her I was responding to the tail end of a voice mail advising me to call this number. She asked for my name. When I told her my name as being James Gelbmann, there was a long pause as if she was looking up my name. She came back and addressed me by Jim, stating that my IRS filings for 2008 - 2014 had been audited and I owed $2,936.25. She said a warrant has already been issued for my arrest and the Sheriff's office will be at my door within two hours. She asked if these back taxes were the result of an error or an intentional attempt to defraud the IRS. I said I would never intentionally attempt to defraud the IRS and asked her to explain my error. She asked if I wanted to correct this error right away. I said I would gladly correct the error as soon as she sent me detailed information about the error. She then said she would have to connect me to her supervisor. While waiting for her supervisor, I received another call from 202-288-4624 from a man claiming to be from the audit division of the IRS. He noted the call that I had just been on, and again gave me the opportunity to pay the balance in full, or face arrest, freezing of my bank accounts, suspension of my driver's license and possible imprisonment for up to 5 years. I then suggested I would hang up and call the IRS back at the number listed on all tax forms. He said as soon as I hung up, he would have to list the call as non-compliant and reiterated the consequences of such non-compliance. I hung up and googled the two numbers.

- MRS| 2 repliesReceived a message to call 509-288-4624 and that there was a warrant out for my arrest. Called the number and spoke to "Ed", badge # ER775301. He said I owed $3,986.73 in unpaid taxes from 2008 to 2013. He said a certified letter was mailed to my home address and never signed and returned in the mail. He said 2 messages were left for me that I did not return. I asked them to send me the certified letter again or I needed something in writing explaining what this was exactly for and that I needed to let my accountant look into this. He said this has nothing to do with my accountant but that the warrant was issued for me. After going round and round and him refusing to send me anything that provided any information on my unpaid taxes, he said I hope you get arrested and was saying more but I hung up. I called back and a different person answered. I asked what company this was. He said it was the IRS. I gave him my cell phone number that the message was left on. He asked my name and after a few minutes said they had called the wrong person and hung up.

- Slim replies to MRS| 1 replyWhy izzit, some visitors like to leave long and overly detailed descriptions of their calls, when some previous posts described both the scam and the defense?
Tamianth and CWG40 both left answers ... that will soon be "covered up" by even more detailed descriptions of what is probably the most well-known and prevalent scam in modern history. Shucks, even the US Congress has had a meeting on the "IRS Scam", and the description has appeared on national news several times.
I guess my real question is, "do posters read previous posts"? - KGBCat replies to SlimI can only speak for myself, Slim, but I do read previous posts. I also received a call and message asking me to call 509-288-4626 for info re: IRS lawsuit. Same as above. See previous posts.
- CLOLooking back, I probably should have just not answered, but I did, and when I told them I knew it was a scam, the man, who sounded middle eastern, began to curse at me. He then threatened my family, telling me he was going to behead my husband, which he knew by name, he said he was going to F**k me and my children up the a**, and that he would blow up my house, which he actually had my address. I called the police in my town, and they said there is nothing they can do, as they cannot trace the number. He did however tell me that you can log a complaint online with the IRS, which I did. I was horrified with the way this man spoke to me, but more horrified that people actually fall for this scam!
