- TaraGot a call saying it was Officer James Brown from the tax collection department of the IRS and that they were going to put a tax lien on my name if I didn't call them back. I'm assuming this is a scam. The IRS has my address and I've gotten no notifications by mail. I won't be calling back.
- DorisTalking too fast to understand most of the recorded conversation, but they mentioned IRS and tax lien and gave me this number saying call them asap. This is the second phone call I've received about this. First one was from Colton, WA. Reported this to IRS fraud division (TIGTA.gov).
- MarI got a call like the others reported. I was to call or they we're going to place a tax lein on m. name. I couldn't understand him but I think I was to have tax info ready which I'm sure meant my SS#.
I didn't call back since I was sure it was a scam. - DeidraHave received several calls over the last week...several = dozens, they finally left a message telling me something about putting a tax lien on my "name". I should have known when they said to call "Officer James Brown" back at the number!! I have already called the police, they are on their way now. I am so sick of these #%@&S% calling!!
BEWARE PEOPLE!!! DO NOT give anyone any information over the phone. If it was really the IRS, they would send you something in your regular delivery mail, or have you sign to receive it!!!!- Caller: Officer James Brown from the IRS
- LindaBunch of crap. Guy couldn't even speak good English. Didn't understand half of what he said but got key words - IRS, Tax Lien, Officer...
- BarryJames Brown is dead and he could speak english.
- Kathy| 1 replyToday a message left on my VM to call "Officer James Brown." It just so happens that I work for the IRS. Report the call to TIGTA which is the law enforcement arm of the US Department of Treasury. There is a form on their web site for reporting phone scams. Let there be no doubt - this IS a scam.
- Caller: IRS Scam
- JulieSept 8, 2014 at 10:08pm, caller id Unavailable and left the message that he is from IRS and to call him at 509-774-0260. He said his name is James Brown. This happened twice already and the first one who called was a lady.
- Caller: IRS James Brown
- MarkThese crooks called me at 10:40 pm and left a message. Reporting to whatever services I can now to try to put an end to these criminals.
- Caller: Claim IRS
- Call type: Debt collector
- Mark replies to KathyYes, thank you. These guys called me at 10:40 last night. I guess they were hoping that I'd be too sleepy to think straight, but I don't think the IRS calls people in the middle of the night. (Actually, I know they don't call or email at all. They send letters via the mail. Any call or email claiming to be the IRS is fraud.)
- MikeSame kind of call as mentioned above. IRS does not call people, and if they did would not be calling at 8:00PM. Scam no doubt. Would not return the call.
- TomJust received the same voicemail as listed above will be reporting they stated they were the IRS and a lien would be placed on my property. Guy barely spoke English called are 12:40pm central time. The IRS would have the necessary information this is a TOTAL scam. In addition, everything is done by MAIL via the IRS. I called a friend who works for them.
- Caller: Claim IRS
- Call type: Debt collector
- JSame thing happened to me, caller left name on answering machine with phone number 509-774-0260 saying his name was officer james brown and he was with the IRS and if I didn't call back they were going 6put a lien on my house. I will not be calling back SCAM!
- Caller: IRS Jame Brown
- Call type: Debt collector
- AnnaThe guy barely spoke English. Barely understandable. Heard a few words like IRS, officer Brown, lein on you if you did not call 509-774-0260. Believe me, the IRS is NOT going to call you, they wiill notify you of any issues via mail. These lowlifes should work as hard trying to find honorable and honest work as they do cheating, lying, and scamming people. A weak economy brings these people out in force.
- Caller: Claims to be IRS
- carol replies to SAM| 1 replyI received the same message and never received any type of bill in the mail or any type of notice
- Alfalfa replies to carolThese are criminal extortionists operating in overseas boiler rooms using VOIP to alter their identities and locations and out of the reach of US law enforcement.
If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.
The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.
By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.
Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.
They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.
Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.
The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.
If you get what you suspect is a scam call, report it to TIGTA through its Web site or call 800-366-4484.
