A recording saying the IRS was filing a lawsuit against me.  Called the number back and got no answer.  I think the IRS would mail you something or show up at your house if it were for real.  Don't people have anything better to do? Wow...

Recorded message that said this is the IRS and this is your last warning, if you don't call back immediately they will be filing a suit against you. Sounded fishy to me, surely the IRS would send a letter. I did not call back. Not sure what the end game would be?

There is a widespread IRS (or CRA) or "tax scam" being  practiced by scammers on both USA and Canadian residents.

USA tax payers should read this:
    http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/Phone-Scams-C ... 5-Filing-Season

Canadian tax payers should read this:
    http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/nwsrm/lrts/2013/l131210-eng.html

    Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

This scam is also described as scam #11, here:

Two calls today, nothing shows on caller id.  Both times left threatening message "IRS is going to sue you".  Said to call immediately, first leaving 509-878-3591, then called again, same threat only saying, "this is your last warning", and said to call immediately to 425-296-7673.  As I know this is a scam, I won't be calling these numbers, but wish to report them.

This is a SCAM.  The IRS will NEVER call you demanding money.  The IRS will notify you by mail only.  Don't bother calling this number back and NEVER give out any information.

I'm a practicing CPA and the scammer left a message about an IRS lawsuit on my home phone.  The IRS never first contacts a taxpayer by phone.  They send letters first followed up by certified mail if the taxpayer doesn't respond.  It's a phishing scam to obtain Social Security numbers and other personal info.  Do not call back.  In addition to the Inspector General, one can report the scam to one's state Attorney General.

Yes, I suspected it was a scam and these posts confirm it.  The voice said this was the final and official call notifying me that the IRS is filing a lawsuit against me.  As one person just noted, the IRS always sends communications by mail, and to get a phone call without any mail notification previously is a red flag.

Total scam.  Originates in either India or Pakistan.  (Ignore and block)

I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone.  US mail only.   IRS does not file lawsuits.   Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter.  But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters.  90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively.  IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes.  IRS has no powers of arrest.    If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job.  IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of  money.  IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone.   IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case.  No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments.  Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but  usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement.    All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals.  All  contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.

They left a number 509-878-3591 stating they were the IRS filing a lawsuit and to phone them. I phoned them six times and they were busy before someone answered.  They were extremely professional at their scam by stating if you didn't pay now that you would be liable in court to pay $20,000 extra in lawsuit costs.  I kept on doubting but was about to fall for it, which I can't believe, but I told him to hold on while I checked his phone number on line to verify 509-878-3591 was the IRS.  Then he hung up.  If I hadn't stated that I actually would have fallen for it.
It terrified me so much that it is actually causing me to have a seizure from the level of anxiety is gave me.

Pre-recorded message stating they were the IRS and this was their final call before filing a lawsuit against me and to call back immediately at 509-878-3591.  Since this is a new number because I just moved and received a new home number that I never use....I knew it was either a telemarketer or a scam so I didn't answer it.  Its a shame that people can do this and get away with it.  There are some people who will get this call and won't know any better and will probably get scammed out of their hard earned money.  I hope they catch this group and lock them up!
