- VPtech65Scammer, one of those foreign Indian accent dudes with a payday loan collection scam. The usual scripted message "If you or your retained attorney do not return the call, all I can do is wish you good luck" lol
I actually fell for one of those a couple years ago. Don't let anyone threaten or scare you into paying a debt you don't owe. Or even if it is one you think you may owe, collectors have to follow the fair debt collection practice. They can't arrest or threaten to arrest you for not paying, and you have the right to see proof of the debt in writing. If they are unable to provide proof, and you get it by high pressure phone call and not in the mail, it's more than likely a scam. Don't fall for it.- Caller: "Alex Washington"

- Ronda PI received a phone call from Banny Rogers today stating that he was an attorney and not a collection agency. He told me that I had 61 minutes to pay $845.35 before I would be arrested. He told me everything that I was accused of was in the affidavit. I told him to forward that document to me so I can read it. All he can tell me is "I hope you like losing your job and paying $5,000 for court fees". He would never give me any information about the loan. I don't like being threaten. I wish people like him get arrested for harassment.

- Charity Williams| 1 replyI received a call from an alleged Morgan Rogers from a "law firm" called Morgan & Associates. He claimed that I owed an online payday loan of $300.00 taken out in March. He claimed I had defaulted on the loan and that he represented the company (Payday Cash) in getting the money paid back. Had no idea what he was talking about. Plus I had gotten a similar call a little while back so I had my suspicions. This guy had the same thick accent as that previous call too. When I requested proof in the form of a mailed affidavit (which he claimed he had) he said that he was just going to send the police to arrest. I told him that I knew he was a fraud because I would have received a summons or affidavit by mail. No one from a law firm would call me and tell me I had to pay them to settle it. I asked for his address. After calling him 3 or 4 times (he kept hanging up on me) he finally told me it was 689 60th St, Oakland, California. I Googled the number they were calling from and found this site. I Googled the address and it came up as a single family home up for sell. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS! THEY'RE SCAMMERS!

- Alfalfa replies to Charity WilliamsThis is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud: - CynthiaReceived call from this number from a guy who sounded like he was from India. Starts off by saying I took out a payday cash advance for $400. When I asked what company he was from he would only say he was representing a law firm, yeah right!!! When I asked him when did I take out this "loan" he said he didn't know the exact date, but it was this year. He said if I didn't pay the money now, police would show up at my door in one hour & that I would lose my job!!! Also, he said that I needed an attorney to meet me at the jail. I must admit he scared me to death with his erroneous threats! Why can't these people be stopped? He was extremely rude & when I tried to ask him some questions, he told me to stop interrupting him.

- yef replies to MikeSee Alfalfa's post just a bit above yours. These are scammers. Nobody gets arrested from their illegal empty threats. As for reporting to the police -- yes -- see if they will take a report. Learn your rights under the FDCPA and see how many times these scammers violate it with every call. I would try to block their calls so you don't have to talk to them again.
- Elspeth replies to Arilita MooreI hope you didn't pay them. Even if your mom owed a loan, she (or you) could call the actual loan company and make sure everything is OK. Also, debt is a civil matter, not criminal - no one is arrested for failing to pay on a loan. Bottom line - NEVER pay a caller money unless they have mailed you proof of debt.
There are a lot of scammers out there (including your caller), who get people to pay on loans they but they are not the company who has the right to collect that money. Report the call to the FTC, the FBI and your state's Attorney General. - Ruth| 1 replyI received a call from this number today. The man with a very heavy East Indian accent said his name was "Samuel Bishop, and I'm calling from Morgan and Associates." I immediately googled 'Morgan & Associates' and told him that what came up was a marketing firm. He then said "that's not the entire name, we are Paul Morgan and Associates." So I googled that and it came up as a Worker's Compensation attorney in Florida - so I told him I don't have a Worker's Compensation case. And then he said "No, it's Paul K. Morgan and Associates and you are being sued. We are sending the police to come arrest you" I said, 'really? what's the case against me?' 'Samuel' said "You are getting arrested. I am going to hang up and call the HR department at your work now, so you will be arrested shortly." and then he hung up...
