I got the call tonight and I felt in the mood to harass them for 4 minutes and 33 seconds. I informed them I was recording the entire conversation on my cell phone for legal protection. I rarely receive telemarketing calls now.
It is a company called "Protocall" or "Prontocall" (or something similar) out on Montreal. When asked for a Canadian Business Registration Number (BN Number), they were unable to provide it saying they don't have such a number (lies). I reminded them the call was being recorded for security purposes on my end and asked if they are aware of laws with Revenue Canada in Canada with regards to company registration and they did not know. I told them I will be replaying the recorded conversation for Revenue Canada as "a company operating in Canada possibly without a BN number and failing to provide this number when requested." Just something to make them think "who is this guy?".
They work on "behalf of Canada Trust insurance." Key word "on behalf," NOT "for." Contact Canada Trust at 1-888-298-3608 to further inquire about their customer database and what third parties they give the information to. Also request to be removed from all their datalists, and if they tell you that you will only be removed for 3 years, demand that your information be removed permanently. They hate having to do this but they can. They won't tell you this.
While speaking to them, I was on Google confirming information. I got the customer service number for Canada Trust, and then I asked them how the information was received since I do not disclose my information to third parties. I was told it came from CitiBank. Contact Citibank at 1-800-387-1616 and do the same as you did with Canada Trust (no TRUST obviously). I have a recording from 4 months ago from Citibank where I informed them my information is never to be supplied to a third party, and they said it would not be. Should be interesting when I call Citibank tomorrow and play that conversation back at them and see what they say since it is a violation of what they had agreed to with me.
Anyhow, the guy on the phone was getting very annoyed with me for asking so many specific questions (because it takes away from his commissions and incentives for "selling" these "promotional offers" to customers).
I used to work in the telecommunications industry in Australia so I know how these companies operate and yes, they are evil.
Worst thing you can do is hang up, because they just log you as a "call back."
You need to be specific in how you speak to them when asking questions. TAKE control of the conversation and don't allow them to cut in. You do not have to be a "polite Canadian." They are not trained to deal with these sorts of circumstances or customers (like me).
Feel free to give them a hard time, but present them with difficult questions and always demand to speak to their supervisor as these phone-drones often don't have a brain or the knowledge to give the correct answers. You can also request the contact number of their "VP of Marketing and Sales" because these telemarketing companies all have one. Yes, this does work, and the VPs hate nothing more than a customer contacting them directly.
NEVER SAY ANYTHING THAT RESEMBLES A "YES" OR "YAH" OR "OKAY" because they use anything that sounds like you are agreeing to them to hold you to whatever they are selling. Yes, this is another insiders' trick of the telemarketing industry.
Hope this helps. We need to fight back as consumers to shut down these companies. I love having worked in the industry just long enough to learn all their trade secrets and then quit and use them against them.
