Be aware of this scam. My father fell for the same scam yesterday.

This happened to my 85 year old mother yesterday. Said it was her grandson in jail in Mexico. She is still shaken up by this. Fortunately she did not fall for it.

My grandmother ALMOST fell for this- they even knew we called her Oma... Does anyone know how they got this information?

Called family member with same scam concerning nephew in Mexican jail needing $900 for bail. Did not work as quickly was able to identify that nephew was at work in Texas. Bought time by stating needed to confirm.
Even had someone claiming to be nephew literally by crying over a phone line. Note: poor quality of call...static.

We received a call from telephone number 760-705-8888 in the name of Maura Collins this morning, 3/6/14, from someone pretending to be my nephew.  He asked for me by a name only my family calls me but my daughter talked to him and was told he was in Mexico in jail.  The story was he and a friend was in a taxi and was stopped by the Mexico police and the driver had drugs so they were all taken to jail.  He needed $1000.00 bail money today or he may have to be there 6 to 8 weeks.  A very clever man got on the phone posing as a US Embassy Agent. He said my nephew and friend had been tested and they were clean of any drugs so he would help them get out of jail today.  ALL we had to do was send $1000.00 and he gave us the address to send the funds via Western Union.  Even gave us my nephew's full name.  After asking for another $950.00 for an attorney and border pass, I felt something was wrong.  DON'T FALL FOR THIS SCAM.  we have already turned it over to the FBI so hopefully they will get caught and hopefully spend a few years in jail in Mexico.
