Received missed call from this number, no message.  Looked online, no company associated.  Called back, system said it was Portfolio Recovery Associates.

Same thing here. Got a call from this number a few minutes ago, and they hung up when the machine picked up. Googled the number because I didn't recognize it. Read the post here saying it was Portfolio, and googled them. If it is indeed Portfolio, it seems they have a habit of calling from multiple phone numbers trying to collect on old debts that either can't be verified, or have gone way past the statute of limitations and aren't legally pursuable any more. Jerks. Any company on the up-and-up wouldn't hide behind twenty or thirty different phone numbers. (Google them, they have an obscene list of numbers they hide behind). Yeah. Like I'm going to give any money to shady people like THAT. They're wasting their time calling me, no way am I dealing with them.

Recieved a call from this #. When they stated it was portfolio recovery,  I said I haven't lost my pottfolio. It is right here so why would I need it recovered? LOL

Just received a call from this number....they never leave a message. Afterwards, I see that this is yet another number for Portfolio Recovery...I added them to my ever growing blocked phone number list.

How many different phone numbers can this blasted company call from!!!!!  What is it gonna take to get them out of business. They are  trying to collect on old debts that either can't be verified, or have gone way past the statute of limitations and aren't legally pursuable any more.  I don't answer any number I don't recognise, guess this is another one to add to the list!

I have received numerous calls from portfolio from many different numbers. I even told to do what they want I'm not paying it put it on my credit or charge it off but stop calling me but yet they still call. I guess we have to go through this same routine everytime they call

i have asked these people time and time again to mail me proof of the debt and the original account information and they say "we can't mail things out"......seems pretty sketchy. I told them last time they called this was someone elses number and if they called again i was calling the cops for harassment unfortunatly ive been getting these calls for the better part of 2+ years

I just called them at the number they called me from. They have a habit of calling and then there's nobody there. I guess it's just auto-dialing and hoping that someone will call back. The guy answered, this is an attempt to collect a debt, blah, blah, blah...... Then he asked me to verify my information. I asked him what it was about and he said he couldn't say until I verified my last 4 and address. I refused and so he said he couldn't discuss it. I said stop calling me then, which i know I have to do in writing, but the guy ticked me off. No idea why he's calling me and he's asking for personal information? Give me a break.

For those of you complaining about their calls, I'm tired of them, too. But legally they can keep calling you until you send them a letter telling them not to call. At that point they can only call you if they will be dropping the matter or if they are taking legal steps. If they take legal steps and the matter is large enough to warrant you getting a lawyer then you can give your lawyer's phone number to them and they are not allowed to call you anymore.

And if you send them a letter make sure it's certified or registered as they can claim that they didn't get it.

if they can't mail you anything to document the debt, then they have to stop. i suggest an airhorn or whistle. Or even better ge t someone on the phone then put the phone between the cushions and go to the movies.

Initially I spoke with Portfolio when they called, I pay my bills on time so there was no reason for a collection agency to call me.  They explained that they were trying to collect on a $190 bank loan, that I took out in 1999.  I was confused to say the least, I've never had a loan for such a small amount.  I requested a dispute form and proof of the original debt, which never arrived, and researched the bank that they said I'd taken out the loan with.  As it turns out it was a minuscule bank located over 2000 miles from me that went out of business in 1991, eight years prior to the time when they claim I took out the loan.  I've gone over my old copies of credit reports, and not once is there an entry for the supposed loan they are attempting to collect on.  

I no longer bother to answer their calls, but they remain an annoyance. With no proof of the debt, it never showing up on my credit report, my having no knowledge of having taken out a $190 loan and the supposed debt being twelve years old, all they can do is be an annoyance.

They won't stop calling. They even called me looking for my mother and they kept telling me that she needs to pay for something that she don't own. To top it off they said she lived in austin,tx which she never lived there. She lives in Houston. Tell me how shady is that, when they start making things up.

These people call me on a reg. basis. what ever you want or saleing I do not want. Please Leave me the Hell alone and stop calling my phone. I will never answer on the calls I get from you.

ID stole 25 years ago. They can forget it. Got 40 numbers blocked.

They call in hopes that the person on the end of the line "will" answer those questions, then they can consider it a reopened debt (if one exists).  Once the debt is reopened then you DO become liable for the debt even it if was a write off and exceeds the statute of limitations for old debts, which is 7 years.  So, DON'T talk to them if you have a debt that is past that time, DON'T give them information of any kind, legit or not...so it doesn't reopen a closed debt.
This is how they make their money...trickery in order to open the debt again then making it legit.

So without the "verification" information there isn't anything they can look up and reopen. :)

LOVE that post Todd! I hate bill collectors, as do most people. So, why would that be anyone's choice of people to impersonate...just sayin lol

Get a silent ringer for your phone that vibrates only and does not ring (Google it). Keep storing their numbers in your contact list, and give it a distinctive name such as Forget It, (let your imagination run free). When they call, your phone vibrates, you see the distinctive CallerID, and continue on with your life without answering the phone. After a while, you will have stored every number they have, severely decreasing their interruptions to your day.

On the off chance they get a number you don't recognize, Google the area code. If you want to dig deeper, follow up and enter the number on this site, see who is really calling, and if necessary, store it with the others. One less number for you to actively answer.
